I was thinking about you the last few weeks.

About 3 weeks ago I had that pain from that Sphincter of Oddi.  Thing is I hadn’t had any codeine for several weeks.  It was close to bedtime and I usually take 1/4 Flexeril at bedtime per the rheumatologist’s order.  I can go up to 1 full pill.  So, I thought this is a muscle why not take the full muscle relaxer.  It worked and I was pain free within 10 minutes, tired but pain free.

Last Thursday I had a hysterectomy and they had the PCA pump with Dilaudid  It worked fine but the next day they took it away and I was left with Toradol which is an NSAID and my 1/2 Lortab but couldn’t take the Lortab any closer than 6 hours and no more than 2 halves or 1 full a day due to that pain from the Oddi.  Some things happened and I was transferred to ICU and they gave me my 1/2 Lortab but about 3 hours later I needed something else and asked for a Toradol.  The nurse asked if I’d rather have the Dilaudid.  Sure but about 20 minutes I was in PAIN.  I asked if the Dilaudid was an opiate and the nurse didn’t think so.  She came back and said she checked and it was an opiate and she had a shot of Reglan which she said was also a muscle relaxer.  It worked, 10 minutes later and no pain.

So, I’m home with a script for Lortabs and told I can use 3 Ibuprofen in between for pain.  I’ve been trying to use my 1/2 Lortab at bedtime then again the next morning.  The Ibuprofen is fine during the day but I’ve been waking up every 2 hours at night taking more Ibuprofen since the 1/2 Lortab isn’t holding.  I finally decided to try a full Lortab at bedtime, I take my 1/4 Flexeril and keep the other 3/4 on my nightstand in case I need it.  Well, for 2 nights I’ve slept 6-7 hours and I’ve had no problem.  Took my 1/2 when I got up and just took another full one with 1/4 Flexeril and not having any problems.

I don’t remember if you ever went back and got the surgery but if not you might ask for a muscle relaxer to help with the pain when it comes on as it seems to be working great for me.

Dee Lan, sorry that you’ve been going thru all this pain. I’ve been there. Luckily mine is under control, I’m on different mg of morphines, tramadol, and oh I can’t think of the name of it but it is sort of the generic form of lyrica.

I havent seen bonbon post lately and I was starting to worry about her. Also 53tdogs, aka pammy. Her Internet must be screwed up because all the emails I’ve sent her are returned to sender, so I’m worried about her too! So if any of you email Pam privately let her know I’m worried, I thought for sure she would have posted this week, it’s the week she’s been waiting for John and marlena’s return!

I say some prayers for you dee LAN that you get some relief!

using the same rationale you did but it didn’t work at all.  Yes, I had the surgery and am fine now.  They found two gall stones stuck in the sphincter (that, BTW, did NOT show up on the MRI!!!).  It was an extremely painful surgery, don’t know why but doc said I had a lot of the CO2 trapped in my abdominal cavity because of the previous abdominal  laps I’ve had, and with no way for it to get out.  Doc said it’ll just take time.

That was three months ago yesterday and I’m still feeling it occasionally.  It was laproscopic and my surgeon also told me the way he had closed me was something new he was trying but would abandon because the recovery way too painful.  Well, thanks for that, doc!

But’d I’d recommend to you if they start coming too often, have the surgery.  Mine was only complicated because of the two ulcer perforation surgeries I’ve had previously, so if you haven’t had any abdominal surgeries, it souldn’t be so bad for you.  You will be rid of it forever.

I am 100% convinced it is the opiates that did it.  Every time I got a spasm was about 15-20 minutes after I had taken one.  And, as we previously discussed, I’m allergic to Ibuprofen so can’t take that.  I’m on 2 mg. of Dilaudid 4 times a day now but trying to wean off it.  I don’t think it’s doing anything any more.

    This is CRAP, isn’t it?

Spleenectomy in 1978 – full incision

Ovarian tumor removed in 1982 – bikini cut full incision

Gall bladder removed 2000 – laproscopic

Hysterectomy 2011 – attempted laproscopic but ended up full incision in the same place as the bikini cut due to weird anatomy, blood vessels where they shouldn’t have been and scar tissue adhering one ovary to the colon, kidney and ureter.   Needless to say they left that ovary.

I’ve only had the pain once without taking any opiates before hand.  I was afraid of taking too much Hydrocodone or too often due to the pain but the 1/2 twice a day wasn’t cutting it and the ibuprofen between wasn’t doing much.  I’ve been taking a full Hydrocodone 3 times a day now with 1/2 Flexeril and so far no problems.  I know a surgeon friend of mine in Chicago said you can have gallstones stuck in the ducts for years after a gall bladder removal and not know it.  He had a woman who was having pain and they found a stone 21 years later.

I’m glad you’re on the mend and hope the pain lessens for you each day.

removed 14 years ago.  Who knows how long those stones there.

As to the ab. surgeries, it seems the laps. are the ones that affect it, not the incisions.  And I don’t think female or spleens count there as effecting the outcome.  It’s only if they go into your stomach or intestines.  The gallblader probably would though because of it’s proximity to the Spincter of Odii.

And I found that the hydrocodon affected my sphincter MUCH more than the Dilaudid ever did.  (Found out today that you will eventually lose the Dilaudid effectiveness while becoming very addicted to it.  I think that has happened to me.)

It’s a pain nobody should have to endure more than once…if that!  (Although a perforated ulcer trumps that pain about 10 to 1.)  That is THE MOST painful thing, by FAR, I have ever experienced…EVER!

Anyway, good luck.  I hope it’s a long time (if EVER) that you get another spasm.

I had Dilaudid in the PCA pump and was getting it every 15 minutes though not sure how much at a time.  It worked great for 5-10 minutes and I was pushing the button again.  When they took me off the pump they went with the Hydrocodone and I would only take 1/2 and not more than a full one in 24 hours so not much relief there.  When I went to the ICU they gave me the Dilaudid via IV and it had a strange effect with seeing double and an out of body feeling but pain was gone.  Giving it IM got rid of pain but no visual or head effects.  It was when I got it too close to the Hydrocodone that I had a problem with it.

reading this thread, Dee?  They must be going, "What a couple of nuts!"

Hey, everybody, just skip over this post.  Unless it’s bed time and you’re ready to fall deeply asleep.

in a hospital bed with shattered knees, ankles, elbow along with another six months after that in hospital bed at home learning to walk again after that…five miscarriges (two ectopic where they cut you at bikini line and your stomach muscles are never as taunt again in spite of a hundred situps) (please forgive spelling)  –

My point, thank God we have the technology we do these days as just a few short years ago (50), many of us could not and would not have come through our medical trials and tribulations.  We are all survivors, lived to see another day and that’s what counts!   I would never laugh at you all, we’ve all been there to some degree – I admire you guysis fortitude, stamina (it takes a lot to pull through a sickness), grace and humor to laugh at all you’ve been through.

Thank you God for all of us being here!
