Last Wednesday my husband and I had to put our 14 year old pug Otis to sleep. I know it was for the best but he was my pal and it hurt so bad. Starting to feel a bit better this week but it’s so hard. I miss him terribly. Our hearts are broken. Just had to vent.
November 28, 2011 at 9:52 pm #2916653tdogsParticipantMy heart goes out to you and your family Manjenco – to lose a beloved – a family member (and dogs are beloved members of our extended families). A friend lost her 14 year old Dobie girl yesterday afternoon, there are no words that can console. Both mine are of geriatric, (above ten years old for dogs), and I know the day is coming that I dread more than anything. This has been on my refrigerator for at least ten years or more, I still can’t read it without tearing up but it’s there to remind me…when the time comes.
A Dog’s Plea
Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for although I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will quickly teach me the things you would have me learn.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps falls upon my waiting ear.
Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.
And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.

November 28, 2011 at 10:47 pm #29168caseyParticipantBeing a super animal lover I’ve been through this enough to know it’s extremely painful and sad. But each day will get a bit better and soon you will remember Otis only with smiles and laughter.
November 28, 2011 at 11:22 pm #29169DeeLanParticipantI’m so sorry. They become your children. When we lost Buddy, our 2 year old mini dachshund that was the first time I’d seen my husband cry.
November 29, 2011 at 12:37 am #29172luckeyParticipantour pets certainly are part of our family. I always think of "Rainbow Bridge" when someone loses a pet.
Rainbow BridgeJust this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….Author unknown…November 29, 2011 at 12:37 am #29173majencoParticipantThanks so much everyone. Your words really do help. He was such a sweet boy. It’s good to know there are other pet lovers out there who understand the deep pain I am experiencing right now. Thanks again.
November 29, 2011 at 12:44 am #2917553tdogsParticipantWill Rogers said, “If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.” I can’t see it be Heaven without dogs. I would hope that the Lord would come visit me where ever that maybe if dogs don’t get to go to Heaven and go to some doggie Heaven.
November 29, 2011 at 12:51 am #29176majencoParticipantYeah I totally get what you’re saying. How could it be heaven without my best friend? He was pure love. If there is a heaven then he has to get in.
November 29, 2011 at 12:52 am #29177majencoParticipantI just sent this to my husband. I hope it helps his heart to heal a bit.
November 29, 2011 at 11:57 am #29179DebbiParticipantPets are part of the family. My cat is the one who greets me when I come through the door. She is my cuddle buddy. Just want you to know, you are not alone missing your dog.
November 29, 2011 at 1:42 pm #29182BonbonParticipantI believe it’s one of the most difficult things in life that we have to endure. I’ve gone through it four times and it never got any easier. Go ahead and cry and feel the pain because each day it will lessen a tiny bit.
Hope you bring home a new friend soon because, for me anyway, that was one of the best comforts I had.
Just keep in mind that Otis is now chasing butterflies up there at Rainbow Ridge and having the time of his life.
November 29, 2011 at 7:03 pm #29198majencoParticipantThanks. I think we are going to get a kitten in the next few weeks and then a Boston Terrier puppy in the spring. I miss my Otis but I still have love left for more little guys.
November 29, 2011 at 9:12 pm #29201NoraParticipantSo sorry you had to put a pet to sleep. I know how had it is to loose a pet, they are literally members of the family!
December 22, 2011 at 4:17 am #29823majencoParticipantUpdate! My husband and I just adopted two 12 week old kittens. Their names are Morticia and Wednesday and they are already beginning to heal our hearts from our loss of Otis. I will post pics as soon as I get some uploaded.
