I guess I should not be (but I was anyway) surprised that Marlena would say to Carrie:  "you didn’t do anything wrong….because you didn’t mean to hurt anyone."  Very poor advice, if you ask me.  Then she tells Carrie that she needs to figure out how she feels about Rafe before she tries to make things right with Austin.  What’s to figure out.  It was obvious to me that Rafe is between a rock and a hard place (no pun intended) where Sami’s cold shoulder toward him for the last month or so has been, but putting all that aside, I could not believe Marlena would practically condone Carrie’s actions with Rafe.  Boy, just tells me how very prejudiced Marlena is about Carrie and Belle over Sami.  And, yes, I know the background between Sami and Marlena, but it still was bad advice, IMO, and the fact that Marlena told Carrie that it was not wrong because she didn’t mean to hurt anyone was beyond belief to me.  Okay, forget Sami if you choose to……what about her HUSBAND, Doc?

a cheating person saying, "I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you" was the lamest, most illogical excuse ever, but to hear a psychiatrist say it when giving advice is beyond stupid! Also, I was thinking about Marlena’s loyalties the whole time she was talking to Carrie–surely she was thinking about how this would hurt Sami. Maybe she is siding with Carrie because she knows what Sami did with E.J., but like you said, Patti, even if you forget Sami, what about Austin?

By the way, this original post is in an odd place (The Brady Pub), but it works for me.

that Malena shouldn’t have said she didn’t do anything wrong, because she did do something terribly wrong.  But I think telling her she had to figure out her feelings for Rafe was correct.  How can she expect work on a marriage when she has feelings for another man?  She needs to resolve those one way or another before she can either work on putting the marriage back together or walking away from it.

I also think her advice is somewhat colored after knowing what Sami did.  In real life, Marlena ought to recuse herself from counceling of any of these people because she certainly can’t be objective here and could end up doing more harm to them than good.

between personal and professional. Carrie is all but a daughter to Marlena and a shrink as well. Plus, as you mention her own affair w/John has to cloud judgment somewhat.
