Frances Reid, ‘Days of Our Lives’ matriarch, dies at 95
Frances Reid, the actress who portrayed family matriarch Alice Horton on Days of Our Lives from 1965 to 2007, passed away yesterday at the age of 95 in Los Angeles.
“I’m so sad to hear the news about Frances Reid,” actress (and Biggest Loser hostess) Alison Sweeney, who plays Sami on the show, tweeted last night. “She was a truly talented actress and we are all lucky and proud to have known her.”

Francis Reid was a fine actress and we will all miss her. I wonder though, will they have Alice Horton pass on or will they just not mention her again like so many other characters. I hope they at least will take a moment to mention the death of one of the finest actresses to ever appear on Days.

If that was their plan, then they would have stopped mentioning her a long time ago and not made such a big deal about her being in the other room or upstairs resting. It just won’t be for a couple months, since the show tapes so far in advance and they need to get actors and actresses back for the couple eposides the funeral will be.
February 5, 2010 at 10:28 pm #10301DeeLanParticipantI only hope out of respect for Frances they can get a lot of the couples that were let go. Bring back Bill, Jennifer, Jack, Laura, John, Marlena, Patch, Kayla.
Even if they’re on a different soap I’m sure they could find in in their hearts to allow them to return for at least 1 episode to pay tribute to one of the greatest actresses in daytime. And if the actors who were let go can realize they’re doing it for Frances and not DOOL they just might be up to it.

February 6, 2010 at 1:16 am #10303DeeLanParticipantI didn’t realize Christopher Stone, the last actor to play Bill had passed.
I do think Scotty, David, Mike, even Shawn should come back just for the memorial. Even if they do as they did with Mickey’s funeral and make mention of some of the family being in another room but not "sorry they can’t be here" That’s getting old.
February 6, 2010 at 1:51 am #10305IzzyBParticipantDays will try to get as many actors as they are able to. I don’t think another soap would allow an actor to play on Days. Mainly for ratings, because I imagine the funeral will pull in many viewers that have not watched in a very long time and Days may keep some of those viewers. Therefore, I don’t see Steve coming back. But I could see Jenn, Jack, Abby, Maybe Marlena & John, Doug, Julie, Melissa, Mike (which actor, the last one?), Laura?, and others I cannot think of now that are not on other soaps.
February 6, 2010 at 12:50 pm #10307BonbonParticipantI’m sure there are a ton of legalities involved with having past actors appearing on a tribute show. To my knowledge, it’s never been done before and probably for that reason. I would think that many of the long-term actors on Days would be willing to do a tribute without pay, just out of respect to a dear friend and long-time cast member, heck, the pillar of the show. But again, maybe the Actors’ Guild would not allow that. I know you have to pay minimum scale for an appearance if you’re not under contract.
So, it’s a shame that it can’t be done the way we’d like to see it but I’m afraid that’s what we’ll have to settle for. We’ll see the current characters and any that may be willing to come back (and Days can afford to pay) but that’s probably it.
I wouldn’t object to suspending the storylines for one day and have nothing more than the actors (out of character) saying relating their rememberances of Frances and showing short clips. I think that would pull in every viewer that has ever in their life watched Days and produce the biggest ratings for a soap…in history!
Oh, well, wish in one hand and spit in the other and see which gets full faster.
February 6, 2010 at 9:59 pm #10309SWParticipantBrad Bell’s family has a long history with Days. They did an actor ‘swap’ once before with Joe M. (he was on B&B as Massimo)and I want to say Kate but am not sure. B&B wanted the actress and made a one time deal to share Joe with Days at a future time. So if the guys agree, it could happen. I could see the Bells doing it out of respect.
