After reading comments on my "Reason to Watch" post, I gave Days a lot of thought. I checked July 4th episode synopsis and this is what I found:

Melanie tries to escape again; Will turns the tables on EJ; Gabi is shocked at what she finds when she goes to see Andrew; feelings resurface when Rafe and Carrie run into each other.

This is part of the problem with Day’s right now. Notice that Melanie tries to escape AGAIN (so unoriginal), and Gabi-that-no-one-cares-about goes to see Who-the-Heck-is Andrew. And then relatives (although not by blood relation) have feelings when they run into each other.

To fix this…I need to CARE about these people. And this was the FOURTH OF JULY!! Where was the BBQ, fireworks, swimming??? I want to love Days again, I really, really do. And then they do crap like this.

What a missed opportunity to have Salemites get together for a celebration, and maybe a little misty eyed missing Lexi.

which were always a favorite from the old DAYS.  I could swear Corday was going to fix this with these past writers (Mar/Dar), but once again his words on paper are pure b/s.  Thank God these writers’ stories are about to end.  When DOOL resumes on August 13th we will see the new writers (Tomlinson/Whitesell) work in place.  After that, if we have another major fail, I don’t see DOOL getting renewed.  I have my fingers crossed, though.

Bo & Hope had at their house every year on the 4th? Not even a sparkler in sight. I also really, really want to love it again.

a lot of negativity expressed here about the show.  As much as I complain about Days, I still LOVE it and look forward to sitting down and viewing it every day.  In fact, sometimes, I’m disappointed when I realize it’s Saturday and there IS no Days today.  Unfortunately, THAT happens frequently.  :o)

Of course we blame the writers for our discontent but I don’t think bringing on new writers is going to make a bit of difference in the long run.  Look how we felt about these current writters when they first started.

For as long as I have been on the internet (since 1995…17 years!) discussing this program, there has been extreme criticism and look how many writers that has encompassed.  It’s the nature of the beast.  Can you imagine if we all only posted how great everything was?  Nobody can bat 1,000 consistently (or even EVER).  It’s like life in general, you have to take the bad with the good.

For me, anyway, I feel these characters are almost like family and no matter what they are doing, I enjoy watching them.  Do I sometimes get bored or disgusted with the show?  Absolutely!  But I would never stop watching because of that, no, the enjoyment I get from it far outweighs the bad parts.  I guess the perfect example of this is that I NEVER fast-forward…ANYTHING.

I don’t know why but it saddens me when I see posts saying people have stopped watching.  It’s almost like dissing one of my kids and I feel somewhat hurt.  Yes, I’m addicted; I’ve admitted it before.  But it’s an addiction that isn’t hurting me or anybody else so I feel no guilt whatsoever.

I’m not saying it’s wrong for anyone to feel as they do, to criticize the show, or to stop watching.  I just couldn’t never do it myself…nor do I even WANT to.  JMO, of course.

I have found DAYS boring and just cruising through it. Not watching it all. Melanie and Gabi are so boring! Will is too smug, something needs to happen with his love life or lack of love life. I hope the John SL happens soon and EJ is not in charge.

Aside from the fact that there was no 4th of July celebration, the spoilers for the show on that day are pretty much the same description of the show everyday lately. As I recall, Melanie tried to escape Wednesday or Thursday and Gabi has been there with Andrew for the last couple of days. Carrie and Rafe have been lusting over each other all week too. BORING!

This could have been my post 5 years ago. But the boredom and disgust have escalated. I get upset when someone says something negative about Bo and Hope (they’re my faves) but most of the time the negative posts have excellent merit. And it seems to be a common thread among posters—so someone needs to do something before it’s too late.

I do ff when all I’m hearing is the same dialogue over and over.  I do run the risk of missing something that hasn’t been said, so I don’t ff as often as I used to.  Also, the flashbacks are not my favorite; so, I’ll do the same for them.

I guess for me the biggest annoyance is that Ken Corday rarely follows through on his promises to make the show better with new writers.  I try to give each group a chance to prove themselves; but, we keep seeing the same old tired story lines.  When something new happens, the writers seem to get to a point where they don’t know where to go with it.  It gets bogged down in repitition and goes nowhere.  Look at the hundreds of primetime weekly shows that have writers who come up with great ideas and keep the viewers hanging from week to week.  I would be happy even if just once a week one of the story lines moved ahead with a riveting scene to keep me excited.  I still like Days and watch everyday, but I miss being excited about watching the show.

but the poundings just keep coming.  There are stories that are about to end, and ones that are about to begin.  No one has any patience, it seems.  Oh well, I know what’s coming and I’m quite happy with it.  But I still do stand by my belief that I think this will the last hurrah for the new writers (except they’re NOT new) to pull this show out of the dark and into the light once again.  If Tomlinson and Whitesell, both experienced soap opera writers, don’t bring this show back to where people start discussing it with hope and positivity, I don’t believe the network will renew it.  So, this means T/W have until sometime in the first half of 2013 (at least I hope they give them that long) to bring it, or we will be seeing Days of Our Lives in its final year.  I’m so hoping they make it to 50 years, though.  Both of these writers are experienced DOOL writers.  They know the history behind the characters.  They also know what the fans want to see  and what they don’t, so if they fail this time, they will only have themselves to blame.   Fans will come and go and come back again, but if it’s not what they want to see, then they’re not willing to watch.  These writers know that, they know the history of the characters, and they know how to write for them.  Will they be given the chance to do that?  Time will tell; but, for now, I’m willing to give them a chance.  We certainly can agree that writers will never be able to please everyone when it comes to our favorite characters or the pairing of our favorite couples.  I’m talking about the story lines here, and that falls directly on the writers.

But the thing about the writers…  I think they all try to do their best but after a while they just plain run out of ideas.  It’s true the primetime shows are much more exciting but they are only once a week and, at best, for only 23 weeks a year, most of them half that or even less.

Imagine trying to continue writing and keep it exciting for FIVE days a week, usually 51 weeks a year.  It seems to me they all start out well and then peter out.  I’m afraid the same will happen with these new writers.  After all, they once got fired from the show also.

Let’s just hope they can keep us interested for a year at least.  I understand everybody’s complaints and getting fed up with the show.  Maybe I’m just more tolerant than most.  Heaven knows, I am an eternal optimist.  I keep thinking it’ll get better.  And sometimes it does.  There have been very few shows (IMO) that I found no merit whatsoever in them, most have something interesting happen.

are these SLs the responsibility of the writers and how much the producers? Do the writers get carte blanche to come up with ideas? Are they in essence running the show as far as content? I read some of the writers’ comments that they were “hog tied” to upper brass when it came to creativity.
For me the glory Days were the big “sweeps” adventures that involved the entire town. Even when that pretty dumb Satanic Marlena story aired, I was there not missing an episode. That’s the difference for me – I was eager back then to tune in the next day; currently I am not.
And remember those masquerade balls and holiday celebrations? Those events, like in real life are what bring us together as family and friends. And as I’ve said many times, where is the fun on this show? Where is the music? Romance has dissolved into musical couples just out for recreational sex.
