It has already been announced that Steven Tyler and J-Lo will not be returning as judges this year, and Randy Jackson may be hanging it up as well. Their ratings have dropped significantly, due to the competition from The Voice and The X-Factor. Too bad if that happens, but the talent on the last two seasons of AI has been less than memorable for me.
July 18, 2012 at 6:44 pm #34370luckeyParticipantcan get to be judges. However, they would have to be some pretty big names to draw the viewers like they had in the beginning of AI. I think it’s run its course and should let it go.
July 18, 2012 at 8:52 pm #34372bluebonnetParticipantRandy’s possible leaving. I can’t believe there are so many AI copycat shows on the air right now. Seems like they add one or two new ones every year. That has to hurt AI viewership as well. I have enjoyed AI for many years, but I guess if it does go off, the positive thing for me would be that I would have freer evenings. AI did tie me down for many months.
July 18, 2012 at 9:13 pm #3437353tdogsParticipantratings and followings and then all the other stations copy it (with variations there-of) and then they peter out. I’m thinking these show formats run in cycles also. There were tons of comedies for a while, then police dramas up the wazooooooo, the lawyer shows. The variety shows genre used to be really big for decades…now with AI they have returned. Hope a really good western or two makes a come back as well. Or a good Twilight Zone rehash…wait ten years folks if you like the singing and dancing shows – they’ll be back…like bell-bottoms and platforms shoes (Oh pleeeeeeeeeeeeeze not those)…
July 18, 2012 at 9:53 pm #34374PattiParticipanthow much money Simon Cowell is paying Brittany Spears and Demi Lavato to judge X-Factor this season.
July 18, 2012 at 10:42 pm #34375NoraParticipantThat’s a shame, I’ve watched it from the very beginning. I didn’t enjoy the last season as much, and there were many years with less talented contestants. I’ll miss it but I’m not going to be heartbroken if it goes away.
July 19, 2012 at 9:49 am #34381BonbonParticipantAccording to Entertainment Tonight, Randy is NOT leaving. And Nigel (forgot his last name), who produces the show says he has celebrities lining up the whazoo (my words) to join the show.
Even though the ratings are down from the beginning (although still among the top rated shows), last season it made FOX $700,000 million. I don’t think that’s something they are going to let go. It may lose some more ratings depending on who they ultimately hire as judges but at least they’ll get rid of J.Lo’s enormous salary which is bigger than Tyler’s and Jackson’s combined.
I don’t watch the show but if they can hold their own against DWTS, I think they’ll survive quite well.
July 19, 2012 at 1:01 pm #34382caseyParticipantalthough AI lost a lot of viewers, relatively speaking it still outdid just about all of its competetion. I think a new judging panel can only infuse some juice into the show, depending, of course on who they get. I think AI needs another strong very opinionated judge.
I do believe this past year had a better contestant lineup than several previous. And I can’t see Randy leaving. It’s not like he’s some high profile in demand talent.July 19, 2012 at 8:03 pm #3438653tdogsParticipantmusic business – not usually in front of the camera – producing and directing.
July 19, 2012 at 8:18 pm #34387BonbonParticipanthe doesn’t command anywhere near the salaries that Lopez and Tyler do. Or, probably most of the other stars they have mentioned as possible replacements. I think him leaving that show would be the same as, say, one of the minor characters leaving Days for something better.
Yeah, I think they need a Simon Cowell or Howard Stern on there.
July 19, 2012 at 9:44 pm #34394PattiParticipantthis morning on CBS. Ryan Seacrest was nominated in the Reality TV "Host" category. In the Reality TV "shows", American Idol wasn’t even nominated this year. The Voice Was, as well as Dancing with the Stars.
July 20, 2012 at 11:16 am #34405BonbonParticipantYou don’t often see a program that has been on as long as AI get nominations. They will get them for the first couple of years and then, nothing after that.
I’m happy for Ryan ’cause I think he’s a great guy. Did Jeff Probst get a nom? I really like him too.

July 21, 2012 at 12:18 am #3444353tdogsParticipantme and all my old lady friends (I know "gramma"-tically incorrect) are all in love with Sheldon, Leonard and the boys.
July 21, 2012 at 11:45 am #34449BonbonParticipantI only watch four shows out of that entire list, DH, Shark Tank, DWTS, and Project Runway. I’ve never even heard of a couple of them. I wonder what that says about my TV viewing. 😮 (Why are some underlined?)
How surprising that so few of the nominations are on network channels. I wonder why that is. I’ve always thought programs that are on premium cable channels, i.e. HBO, Showtime, etc., should not be included in The Emmys because not everybody can watch them. They should go back to The Ace Awards for them.
Thanks, Patti, for the list.
