Suzanne Rogers is Salem’s Ultimate Survivor

by Michael Logan February 08, 2010

Suzanne Rogers is about to get a story line on Days of Our Lives that hits close to home. Maybe too close. Come March, her character, Maggie Horton, will be diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a treatable but incurable neuromuscular disease that Rogers—a former Radio City Rockette—contracted in real life back in the mid-1980s. At the time, Days also gave the disease to Maggie to explain Rogers’ shocking appearance, which included considerable weight gain and facial bloating due to her medication. Rogers has been in remission for several years. The same goes for Maggie—until now. TV Guide Magazine spoke with the Emmy-winning Rogers about this surprising development.

Thanks for sharing that.  I love Maggie and Suzanne.  I’m looking forward to her storyline.

Wasn’t she diagnosed with that on the show years ago when she was diagnosed in real life.   I thought they wrote it into the storyline because of the steroids she was taking and the effect it was having,  the tiredness and to bring out public awareness.

that’s pretty disappointing.  I don’t see where that’s going to be so exciting.  In fact, since she already has it, how can she now be diagnosed with it?

I thought she was going off the wagon?  She already has this disease!  So what?  She goes out of remission?  I think the drinking is a better and more dramatic storyline.

I am glad they are bringing out the MG in the story line.  It is a real disease and I have a couple relatives with it.  Nice to have something that is true and not so far out there and knowing Suzanne really deals with MG makes it all the more touching.  I just explained to a relative that she has had this for years so that they would feel better about the relative who just found out.

I agree.  Even though she’s had it for years stress can trigger a relapse so dealing with Mickey’s death could be a trigger to have it flare up again.

If they go with this they at least for once will be keeping history in tact.

Kinda sad they have to bring up something so painful to her in real life because they couldn’t find a s/l that was more interesing.

I know she was pleased they brought it out when she was first diagnosed.  It brought the condition to the public’s attention.  I’m thinking perhaps she’ll be embracing this as well since it is a big part of her life and having the condition I’m sure she’ll make sure they do it right and not sugar coat or make light of it.

(Sorry, this is not a new post; I was simply editing a mistate and it posted it as a "New" post.)

MG is a very painful and very debilitating disease, in which case I’m sure Suzanne won’t have to do much ‘acting’ to pull it off, since she’s been there, done that IRL.  In any case, I’m hoping we get more of a storyline with it as well.  How will other characters be involved in her plight, and what will the effect be on the lives of other characters, such as Nathan, Mia, Melanie, Hope, Julie, Caroline……people who are extremely close to Maggie.  In other words, it may sound cruel, but I don’t want to just watch Maggie suffering through this illness day after day, or lying in a hospital bed, and that’s all there is to it.  See, I told ya’ I would sound cold, but I’ve seen enough people doing that already.  I want a storyline that will really give SR her time to shine.
