The g.kids were her for T.Giving and yesterday we went on The Jungle Queen, a boat that cruises along the intracoatal waterway where you see all the Gazillionaire homes, stop on a Seminole island for dinner, and back again.  Very enjoyable.

Anyway, on the way back last night (about 9:20) we saw a manatee and her baby sleeping next to a lighted dock.  I’ve lived here 12 years and it is the first one I’ve seen.  Seen lots of dolphins but never a manatee.

Then, my g.daughter (11-years old) told me about an amazing experience she had this past summer.  They live just a little south of Daytona and there is a place in the middle of the intracoastal that has an island known as the Disappearing Island.  At high tide it disappears completely. At low tide it’s about 3′ above sea level.  She was swimming there and a manatee swam up to her and let her pet it (although that is illegal) for quite awhile.  Then it swam under her and lifted her up almost out of the water.  I asked her if she was scared but she said no, she knew it wouldn’t hurt her.

That’s an experience very few people will ever have.

are very gentle creatures and it’s shameful that anyone would want to harm them. I would love to have the experience of petting one – what a thrill!

Kind of ironic, huh?  My g.daughter admitted she knew she was doing wrong.  At least she wasn’t riding it.  I’d probably be tempted to pet it also when it’s that close to you.
