I’m really getting tired of all the same-sex kissing. I feel like the show has decided to pander to the gay community disregarding the feelings of its long-time viewers. And, please, let be perfectly clear that I have no opposition whatsoever to gays but I do NOT want to see them kissing and in bed scenes. I’ve started looking away now when I see one coming. I don’t care if they want to continue with the Will/Sonny relationship, just keep that stuff off camera.
I don’t know if I’m in the minority or not but I really think TPTB should take a good look at this and decide if they are pleasing more people or pissing them off. And I think, for the most part, people don’t (or won’t) say anything about it for fear of being labled homophobic.
February 7, 2013 at 4:02 pm #37694maryanneParticipantI don’t think we need to see the bed scenes for any of them. Leave something to our imaginations!!!!!!!!!!
February 7, 2013 at 4:15 pm #37695bluebonnetParticipantOne day this week every scene showed a couple in bed. I never FF so much since the fantasy sequence with that couple on the island. Was that Greta and Austin? See, I FF so much I can’t even remember for sure who it was!
February 8, 2013 at 3:04 am #37709powerpaw2ParticipantI don’t want to watch any of them making out or whatever. The slurping noises are just icky.
One of the most tasteful scenes ever was in Urban Cowboy when "Bud" leaves Gilley’s with "Pam" and they go to her high-rise apartment in Houston. She tells him she has something to show him and opens the bedroom door where there is a saddle on some sort of sawhorse or whatever beside the bed. He smiles, walks in and she closes the door. The writers let the viewers use their imagination.
February 8, 2013 at 4:40 am #37710shadowParticipantThese writers are fixated on the couples being in bed so much. It’s almost like showing porn movies. I completely agree also that showing the gays kissing in public so often and in bed together is too much, too often.
It’s sad to call them writers, when they can’t seem to come up with any good storylines, except the same old thing, over and over.
February 8, 2013 at 2:02 pm #37715mommytutuParticipantI donet want to see anymore making out scenes by any of the characters. A kiss here or there is o.k., but all of the kissing is way too much and then throw in the sex scenes and I totally agree, it’s like soft porn. Leave something to the imagination. I don’t think any viewers of daytime dramas want sex on TV. I sure wish the writers understood how tittilating subtlety and innuendo could be.
February 8, 2013 at 2:31 pm #37716PattiParticipantand that doesn’t make me homophobic, just uneasy watching it. However, if one show doesn’t keep up with the times, it’s quickly blackballed or tagged as being homophobic or prejudice against gays or any other number of names the industry could or would come up with, mainly because soaps have an extremely large gay audience, especially males. All soaps have added storylines involving gay or lesbian couples, and they all have allowed the viewers to watch them explicitly making out, whether in public or private. Doesn’t mean the fans have to like it, nor are they being forced to watch; just means the networks insist on keeping up with the times. No one is going to stop it, so you the choice of either having to fast-forward what you don’t like, move away from the TV, or close your eyes or look away, but whatever, in today’s culture, they’re not going to go backward. I guess what bothers me more than anything is that straight actors are so willing to do it and then perform their roles, especially their love scenes so naturally that it makes me wonder if they might possibly be bi-sexual (or an actor can quit, like the actor on Y&R did), but I suppose the scenes themselves don’t bother me that much, because no particular scene lasts that long anyway before it cuts to another. I do have to admit, I have looked away a few times when watching Will and Sonny or Sonny and Brian, simply becaue it made me uncomfortable to watch them; but the hetero scenes just don’t bother me that much. Some of them I actually like.

To me it is no different than straight couples who have love scenes together. After all, Alison and James look very natural and comfortable together. However, they are not involved in real life. I remember Galen’s wife not liking love scenes between her hubby and Alison– but it is her hubby!!
I think to an actor it is just a scene. That they can make you believe it is real is what makes them a good actor.
I kind of like more left to the imagination. Like going into the bedroom and closing the door, fade to black.
February 9, 2013 at 12:29 am #37731BonbonParticipantMy head understands that but emotionally I can’t accept it. If the actors were gay in real life it wouldn’t bother me at all. Yes, weird, I know. Bit just how I feel.
And Patti, while I understand wht you say about keeping up, I have to question why TPTB would want to continue when the viewers–including the gays–don’t like it. Although we really haven’t heart from any gay guys who may like these scenes. So, like you say, we can choose to watch or not.
February 9, 2013 at 1:10 am #37732PattiParticipantbecause as far as I can determine, we don’t have any; but I read several other boards (only post to this one), and believe me when I tell you, Sonny and Will are idolized by the gay community. How do I know they are gay, you may ask? Because they are very open and say they are, and although the comments relating to the Will/Sonny storyline aren’t always agreed upon, their relationship as a gay couple certainly is.
February 9, 2013 at 1:29 am #37733MoGirlParticipantI am uncomfortable with Will and Sonny’s scenes and not with the story but I thought EJ and Sammy were showing too much too. My grandkids ride the school bus here sometimes and I have to change the channel all the time. I agree leave soemthing to our imagination.
I have laughed lately about how they have dragged out Jen and Dr Dan !! Everyone else is in bed after 10 minutes of meeting and these two draw it out like they are virgins . Been amusing anyway.
February 9, 2013 at 1:58 am #37735TFlo1018ParticipantSince I saw a post above mention that they have not seen a gay man post on this issue I thought I’d share.
I hate to bursy anyones bubble but if you have a problem with ONLY the gay love scenes (albeit making out or them in bed together) that does in fact make you homophobic. If you are uncomfortable with it then you have a level of homophobia in you that you are not quite aware of or want to admit to. Put it this way – would you say "oh she’s pretty for a black girl" and not expect someone to label that as racist? Admitting you are uncomfortable watching gays share affection on any level is homophobic – no other way around it. If a heterosexual person said they were uncomfortable watching heterosexual couples make out on the show as well, so be it. You’re uncomfortable with any type of PDA. Totally makes sense. The night time soaps of the 80s left a LOT to the imagination – some people just prefer that.
I also think it’s a bit naive to think that b/c an actor can/wants to play "gay" on a show that we should question their sexuality. If an actor rapes someone on a show, do we think he can be a rapist in real life? If an actor is racist on a show with such conviction that they win an award, do we question if they are racist in real life?
Soaps are supposed to be a mix of an escape with a tackle on what is real and relevant in the world. Like it or not there are gays out there – we exist. Women (not all but some) watch soaps b/c they want their own "Bo Brady" to sweep them up onto a motorcycle correct? Why can’t we (gay men) watch someone we can relate to as well? I started watching DOOL hard core (always watched it as a kid playing with my toys) when Sami debuted on the show. I felt, at the time, wow – a teen that is relevant. I felt like I grew up with her b/c she was 2 years older on the show then I was at the time. I felt a connection – just like I feel a connection with the gay characters now.
I don’t idolize Sonny or Will but as a gay man in his 30’s I can relate to how they are both feeling and what they are going through (minus the whole kid part.) Being gay is very difficult and the way DOOL is handling this storyline with them is incredible. I’m often weary when a soap (especially DOOL) tackles any type of real emotion or social issue but they’ve done this with class and taste and I appluad them for that. Somewhere, some gay young man is watching this and feeling better about himself b/c of the job they are doing (especially Chandler.) For those on here who say they gay men they "know" don’t act like Will/Sonny, well perhaps they don’t. But if your "gay friends" are over the age of 50 they probably never had the chance to do so. I was open about my sexuality in my late teens/early 20s b/c it was okay to be myself. I hate to break it to anyone but we kiss, make love and have fights just like the rest of you. DOOL is just showing that and it’s no more or no less then Brady/Kristen or Marlena/John. Simply put, if you don’t like it then FF but please don’t say that it bothers you but you’re not homophobic b/c you are. AND you’re a hypocrite too.
February 9, 2013 at 9:06 am #37739BonbonParticipantWhile I’m very happy to have a gay man post here (because we never get to hear your opinions or point of view on things), I’m afraid you are reading something into my post that isn’t there. While I’m not fond of any of the "sex scenes," gay or straight, I said below that what bothers me about Will and Sonny’s is because the actors are not gay in real life. If I knew the actors were actually gay, it would be a very natural thing and not make me so uncomfortable. (You really should read my post further on down.) Maybe I should have said, "Two straight guys making out makes me uncomfortable and I don’t like to watch. Would that have elicited the same response from you?) Anyway there’s not an iota of homophobia in my body.
I have been sympathetic to the gays’ plight since I was in high school (55+ years ago) and found out my next door neighbor was gay. We sat many nights on our front stoops discussing what he was going through (he was not out) when I was one of only a couple of people he chose to confide in. I have always stood up for gays when people would try to tell me it was a "choice." You’ll never convinceme of that! Most of my few gay and lesbian friends ARE over the age of 50 but I also have some friends, more acquaintances than close friends because of our age difference, who are much younger (don’t know any teens though).
So, I’ll just say that you have way misjudged and accused me of something that is very far from the truth. We have Powerpaw here who has graciously given us her opinion on this topic but I don’t believe we’ve ever had a gay man speak out here. I hope you will stay and continue to do so because I value other people’s opinions and POV…but, please, don’t ever accuse me of being homophobic or, at least on this topic anyway, a hypocrit.
February 9, 2013 at 12:59 pm #37741TFlo1018ParticipantPerhaps my comment came across as it did b/c you have posted more then once about your dislike for seeing them kiss on screen – it comes across like you really do have an issue with it.
I still do NOT get why you have an issue with seeing 2 straight men together on screen. It’s not like their chemistry is mind blowing (which if it was – then MAYBE i would get where you are coming from.) They are actors and they are being paid to do a job (and Sonny was a gay character on the new, awful 90210.) Now if their chemistry was like, say, EJ and Sami, well then I might raise an eyebrow with you and go hmm…. why is this scene so damn hot?!? But I’m not overly impressed by their chemistry together, it actually seems forced. Their dialogue however, is right on point.
Well, i appreciate your committment to your friend, his plight and our community. Perhaps in the future you can be more conscience about how you position your posts and writing as someone who doesn’t know you (i.e. me) finds it a little abrassive and it does come across homophobic. I imagine that would be the gay with other gays. And i’m far from sensitve so for me to read it that way…. i dunno…. Something is there. HOWEVER I’m happy to be on the board and really enjoy reading everyones post whether I agree or not
February 9, 2013 at 2:02 pm #37746caseyParticipantI’ve stated here a number of times that I am uncomfortable with excessive sex scenes between both straight and gay couples. I suspect Days’ motive for the gay trysts is less an altruistic attempt to embrace, educate and forward gay rights but to raise ratings by being controversial and “edgy.”
I have two gay couples as good friends and they would never behave this way in public as we’ve seen Sonny and Will. As would neither my heterosexual friends.
I do believe you can take umbrage with these soap encounters without necessarily being lableled homophobic. -
