I got my new computer all up and running and had to get Windows 7 on it (I coulodn’t beg, borrow or steal XP). I’m just wondering if anybody else had the same trouble I’m having learning it. It seems to me that they have made things worse instead of better. In Word and Excel you now have to do a couple of functions that used to be done in just one. And transferring my old files from a disk was an absolute nightmare that even a computer whiz had problems doing. Yech, I hate change.
April 12, 2010 at 12:21 pm #11973PattiParticipanthe wanted to put it on mine, but I’m too set in my ways. I’m from the old school: "if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it;" and I’m fine with Windows XP for what I do, plus I have all of the Microsoft Office features, which enables me just fine. Thanks for the heads-up though; you just gave me another reason not to switch. If it’s one thing I can’t deal with, it’s new programs that are too complicated or difficult.
April 12, 2010 at 5:01 pm #11976DeeLanParticipantOne of the problems I had in the beginning using the Retail Candidate (available for trial before it was being sold) was programs out there weren’t compatable with Win7, including Microsoft programs such as Word. Now that we purchased it and I re-installed and ran an update on Microsoft Office they run smoother and I’m having no problem with Microsoft Office 2003.
My husband partitioned my hard drive and when we made the switch from XP to Win7 I moved everything from my C drive to another partition. Installing Win7 and accessing my files have been no problem, even my emails were intact along with my address book and all my bookmarks.
I love Win7 and am having no problem whatsoever with any program on it since we purchased it. It’s got so many features that make it easier to do things that I don’t miss XP at all.
April 12, 2010 at 7:31 pm #11981BonbonParticipantit’s just that it’s so hard to find things right now. I’m like Patti, set in my ways and resistant to change.
April 12, 2010 at 8:56 pm #1198453tdogsParticipantand since they said they loved their W7, I have toyed with the idea of upgrading…however, every time I upgrade at home, (last time three years ago when I got new laptop w/Vista), and every time we upgraded at work, nothing works correctly until you get the bugs worked out. You have to save all your stuff, configure this, configure that, blah, blah, blah… All I want to have to do is put the download in and have it work. So many times before, when there are glitches, I’ve sworn to myself I’m going MAC next time…but here I am – still a PC user…better the devil you know I guess…
April 12, 2010 at 9:47 pm #11987DeeLanParticipantWhen I switched from 95 to XP I felt the same way. Everything takes getting use to and then you can’t remember what you thought was so great about the old one.
April 12, 2010 at 9:48 pm #11988DeeLanParticipantVista didn’t work right from the beginning. A lot of bugs that never got fixed. Win 7 is suppose to be the replacement for Vista which works.
Microsoft will eventually stop supporting XP which means nothing as long as you’re not having problems with it.
April 12, 2010 at 10:47 pm #11991SWParticipantMac! Plus, it’s all integrated to work together!
April 13, 2010 at 11:19 am #11995BonbonParticipantis more like the Mac operating system. And, from what I’ve heard it’s 100% better than Vista. It’s just that it’s so different than XP and I don’t remember having near as many problems adapting to XP than I’m having now. (An example is finding the place to fill an Excel cell with a pattern.)
I’ll have to admit, the only problems are with Word and Excel. There are so many features that were second nature that I can’t even find now and when I try "Help" it’s almost like a foreigh language. <Sigh> I guess it’ll happen eventually.
April 13, 2010 at 3:45 pm #12008DeeLanParticipantBonbon…….What version of Excel and Word are you using? I have Office 2003 and had no change at all in how to do anything. When I was using the RC of Win7 before they put it out for sale I had a problem with Word not opening properly and I had to do an extra step to get to it but since I purchased Win7 and ran the updates of Microsoft Office I’ve had no problem.
April 13, 2010 at 4:16 pm #12010BonbonParticipantI’m not having problems with it operating correctly, just finding things that they’ve moved around or changed. I’m probably making too much of a big thing here.
Something else I hate is what they’ve done to Hearts. You don’t have any speed options anymore so I have to sit there and wait for each card to be played. Ho-hum. And with regular Solitaire, they’ve changed the decks and as soon as you play a card on top, the one on the pile automatically turns over, I don’t like that. And with Spider Solitaire, you used to be able to right click to get a clue…gone!
I know, bitch, bitch, bitch!
April 13, 2010 at 4:24 pm #12011DeeLanParticipantI was like that when I switched from 95 to XP I had things just the way I wanted and suddenly things changed.
April 13, 2010 at 9:17 pm #12021SWParticipantgo to formatting palette, borders and shading, the shading box should be clicked, that brings up the drag down menu to choose a pattern. Color is also in that section. You can also insert photos etc. I keep the formatting palette floating on the side of the document and it really helps. Good luck with your learning!
April 13, 2010 at 9:38 pm #12024BonbonParticipant…but it’s been a real chore with everything I’ve been doing. I guess it’ll just take time to hunt everything down and THEN trying to remember it the next time.
The women’s club I belong to is having a big Kentucky Derby party of which I am chairman and I’m trying to do all kinds of things, invitations, tickets, programs, etc. with some creativity. Now was NOT the time to have to contend with a new system.
April 13, 2010 at 10:50 pm #12030SWParticipanta while to figure out what it could do – lots more than the previous version but things were in different places with lots of drop-down menus. And, this is coming from a person who uses 5 different operating systems (3 Mac ones and 2 PC [an ancient Windows 98 and XP] between home and work). It’s really crazy at times as the software is frequently different even with the Macs. Luckily, I know them fairly well but still can get frustrating when you try to do something on one that doesn’t work the way it does on the other.
