and I don’t know what group it came from (I’m thinking it was the VFW), but they are now saying that Memorial Day should not be celebrated with parades, picnics, revelry, etc. Instead it should be a somber occasion, ala Good Friday, where you should reflect on and remember the veterans. I can’t say I agree with this thinking, just throwing out what I read.
yesterday I think from a WW2 vet. I don’t agree about not celebrating it because I myself think about vets whether it’s a parade or not. In fact parades are more likly to draw attention as long as they are focused on service and not some run of the mill hoopla.
We used to have a parade followed by a service at our community park. Most people would leave after the parade and skip the service. Last year they reversed the procedure and had the service first then the parade. That really was a good idea especially since the younger people now have a better idea of the true meaning of this holiday.
