Woo hoo Patti! I’ll bet Ravens fans are still celebrating. If that is a prelude to the Super Bowl, it’s going to be a humdinger! Run the table and you have home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Casey, the Bills are only one game behind the Patriots in the division. Wow! I’m hoping the 12/21 game is televised. The Ravens and Texans have drawn a blueprint for how to beat Brady, Belichick and friends. This is getting interesting!
The Jags continue to underwhelm. The o-line is so bad the OC decided to pass 3 times while at the goal line. Minshew provided a much needed spark when he came in, but the INT off of the deflection took away any hope of a comeback. While I never said Foles was a great QB, I thought he would be much better than what we’ve seen.
Aaron and the Pack won easily over the Giants as expected. The only stumbling block I see for them is an away game at Minnesota. Should be a good one.
December 2, 2019 at 3:08 pm #56619caseyParticipantthat 21st game was flexed awhile ago so it should be nationally viewed. Boy, the Pats look like they are taking a huge step down. Brady looking all of his 42 years. But to be fair he only has 2 legit weapons – White and Edelman- and I don’t see how the Pats brass could have let that happen. I think their stellar D masked big offensive problems. However, never count out TB entirely. His QB ratings though have been horrible – way under his normal 100.
What’s with the Jags? It seems more than a few teams this year have been yo-yoing w/QBs. I’m no Marone fan though after his behavior in Buffalo. Good to see Pack rebound. And then there are the mighty Ravens – they look simply unstoppable and who has the answer for Jackson?!
I’m actually concerned about the Steelers. They are an incredible 7-5 after losing JuJu, Connor and down to their “Duck” QB. Props to Mike Tomlin. Love seeing the Browns lose. They have a childish QB and childish coach. How immature to don that t-shirt that said “Pittsburgh started it” even though it was likely true.
Playoff picture really looking exciting!December 2, 2019 at 3:27 pm #56620PattiParticipantand a loss for the Patriots gives us the #1 spot for now, and hopefully we can keep it going in December. What a game! Granted, we may not have piled on the points as we have in recent wins, and Lamar may not have dazzled the 49ers with a slew of new records, and the deluge we had to play in may have kept both teams from playing their best, buy hey, the W at the end of the game, thanks to our glorious kicker, Justin Tucker, kept us red hot against a team that under normal circumstances was every bit as deserving of the win as we were. Fabulous team, those 49ers, who came out of the tunnel just as good, just as confident, and just as tough, making this a championship-like game on both sides of the ball. There were so many little things that kept us in the game that I would get tired of typing and you would get tired of reading; so I’ll just say that as far as this fan is concerned, at the start these two terrific teams were dead even and the challenge became finding a way to win. So lo and behold, it is no surprise to us that once again, as so many times in our past, our unsurpassed kicker, Justin Tucker, was the hero of the game with a field goal for the win! Wow, get ready for us Casey, because we are coming to a possible snow-ridden field to play a very difficult team in probably another sloppy weather situation once again, where I have to say, as I did before the start of our game with the 49ers, may the best team win! Looking forward to our match-up and how our teams handle each other by being resourceful enough to make the plays that will make the difference. Gonna’ be another nail-biter, I’m sure!!!
December 2, 2019 at 7:27 pm #56621caseyParticipantis just extraordinary. Our guy Hauscha was like that before getting injured a couple years back and now he can make you nervous, missing a FG and extra point last time out.
I don’t think the like of Jackson has quite been seen yet. He’s better IMO than Vick or any other running QB because you cannot label him that way. Not sure about Sunday’s “snow” as I think it’s supposed to be around 40 degrees.
Also, the Bills are drawing attention as 2 of their games are flexed – Pat’s and Steelers who got moved to prime time.
Very exciting time for us yet I don’t give the Bills a real legit chance against the Ravs. But just hope it’s a game.December 3, 2019 at 1:09 am #56622powerpaw2ParticipantSo much for professionalism, huh?
Marrone is gone at the end of the season. I sent the following letter to Mark Lamping who is the president of Jags operations….
Dear Mr. Lamping,
I was an Availability/Problem Manager for IBM on the Capital One account. It was my job to join conference calls during high severity incidents to ensure the outage was being resolved as quickly as possible. Incidents of high severity ranged from 0 to 3 (with 0 being the worst) with severity being determined by regulatory, reputational and/or financial impact to the business. A day or two after resolution, those on the incident call would convene to discuss ways to prevent recurrence altogether or mitigate impact should recurrence be unavoidable.
Right now the Jags are at a severity 3 and teetering on a 2. The fans are disgruntled which will lead to financial loss for stakeholders if things don’t change. Basically all we hear from coaches and players is “we need to do better”. I have yet to see anyone exhibit anything close to the degree of passion that was shown by Tim Tebow after the Gators’ 2008 loss to Ole Miss.
The offensive plays are predictable, we play a lot of zone on defense with the blitz coming once in a blue moon. Earlier in the season CBS showed a graphic indicating Fournette gains more yards when running to the left than when the play goes up the middle or to the right. So on first and goal in the third quarter yesterday, where does the play go? Up the middle, exactly where the Bucs expected and Leonard was stuffed. John DeFilippo was supposed to change up things, but all I see are the same old plays from the past few years. Then there’s the offensive line. Yesterday I watched a pass play where Fournette stayed back to block. He was handling his man, but the right tackle released his man to block the guy Leonard had picked up. The result was a sack.
I could on about penalties (especially those after the play has ended), defensive players not staying in their lane, etc, but I know you’re a busy man. The Jags need to go into damage control mode to repair the relationship with the fans. I propose holding a town hall where some members of the front office and coaching staff as well as players field questions from a group of 20 – 30 fans. Of course the fans would need to be respectful in asking their questions and giving comments. Last week I brought this up to Brent Martineau on his radio show and he liked the idea.
I lived in Jacksonville from 1977 – 87 then started coming back to visit in 1999. The more I visited, the more I wanted to move back. Because of family issues I didn’t make it back permanently until late 2014. I love my town and want it to be successful in all areas including our football team.
I sincerely hope you and the rest of the Jags’ leadership team will consider the town hall. Perception is reality to those who watch the games then hear a few select sound bites during a newscast or sports talk radio show. Right now it seems like the team doesn’t care. A town hall would be an opportunity to prove otherwise.
Respectfully,
Who knows if I’ll get a reply, but we shall see.
December 3, 2019 at 2:54 pm #56623caseyParticipantAnd well thought out, not just some kneejerk reaction. Some of these coaches can be so stubborn on play calling which is often just arrogance. I love the town hall idea but I think that would send the brass cowering under their seats! Good on you Power Paw for coming up with a smart idea!
December 3, 2019 at 3:21 pm #56624powerpaw2ParticipantThey are going to lose the fanbase if they don’t do something. I agree with benching Foles and starting Minshew, but that doesn’t even begin to address the woes of this team.
December 4, 2019 at 2:54 pm #56628caseyParticipantnow you know for sure the Ravens have really arrived – Pope Francis was sent a signed Jackson jersey!
December 5, 2019 at 5:02 pm #56635PattiParticipantI would love to see him put it on, but that’s doubtful. What a blessing that would be!
December 9, 2019 at 3:08 pm #56657caseyParticipantI have to think that Patti after yesterday’s game. I do think our D can play with anyone, but the offense is not yet in your league. Josh needs to start quicker and find his long touch again. I did not expect a victory so thought our guys played okay. A win Sunday night against the Steelers is a must. Is this the beginning of a downfall for Patriots?
December 9, 2019 at 4:03 pm #56658powerpaw2ParticipantI was super happy that the game was broadcast here in Jax. Very entertaining compared to the Jags’ debacle.
Casey, the Bills’ D held the Ravens to their 3rd lowest points scored so far this season. Josh never looked comfortable. I was very puzzled when late in the 2nd quarter after having success running the ball and getting close to or in the red zone, the OC started calling pass plays. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Patti, I think it will be a Ravens-49ers Super Bowl and I wouldn’t bet against Lamar. He is truly the MVP of the league.
The Patriots are not the force that they have been, but there were three awful calls that impacted the outcome of the game. With that being said, in the past they have found ways to overcome such obstacles. Let’s see what happens come playoff time which is when Brady and Belichick tend to shine.
December 9, 2019 at 4:33 pm #56659PattiParticipantthat game yesterday was the toughest, I truly believe, that the Ravens have had to contend with for our win. The Bills and the Ravens QBs had some problems in the first half with the pass. Fortunately, things got a lot better in the secone half. But to me, our Defense won our game, and here’s why. They had Josh Allen literally running for his life practically all day long, and sacked, what, 6 or 7 times on the day? But what your D did to us is keep our running game under control where it was possible for them to catch us and they practically did just that, were it not for that defensive move late in the 4th quarter when Marc Peters broke up Josh’s pass to none other than John Brown to keep him from scoring the TD, which I have no doubt he would have. Great play by Peters. But, as I said, your D kept Lamar down to a few good runs, but nothing like we have seen him do in past games with the Pats, the Seahawks, the Texans, the Rams, so you see, you do have a great team and I read a quote from Josh Allen where he admitted that he is pleased with his progress, but he is still in the "learning" stage of a very early career (as is Lamar), and that the NFL has not seen the best of him……YET! That I am quite sure is true.
Again, some questionable calls made on both sides of the ball to both teams, and I, as a fan, will never be satisfied until the NFL finds a way to school these referees not only on the rules of the game, but what designates the penalty and perhaps explains the rule so that people will not get completely fed up with bad calls. Both teams got some pretty bad calls yesterday, and I am getting a little tired of explaining it away with, "well, we see it in all games all the time." That’s just not good enough. Players have to be taken to task for their mistakes; so should the refs. Some of their blatant mistakes yesterday were not even questioned….just accepted!
The Bills, as far as I’m concerned, had me shaking in my boots yesterday, and I was not satisfied with the "W" until the time ran out completely. A one-score Win is never easy to digest, and I realize it could have gone completely in the opposite direction.
But, a win is a win, and at the end of the day, that’s all that counts. It’s just that in some instances the pride has to be swallowed instead of taking on bragging rights.
Great game…but whatever the outcome, my football sisters, you know I love you both more than my luggage!!!! LOL!!!!
December 9, 2019 at 7:19 pm #56660powerpaw2ParticipantI just wish SPMB had a chat feature where we could message during games. I was thinking about you two the entire game.
I can’t remember how long either of you have been on the board. I joined in 2000 or 2001. JArnold (no longer active) and I somehow exchanged email addresses. We’re still friends to this day despite me being in Jax and her in Alaska. She helped me through some late night drives from VA to FL when I was vacationing.
The Jags are so pitiful. It’s become a "They Shoot Horses, Don’t They" type of thing.
The Pack won, but they should have put more points on the board and they still don’t have as great of a defense as shown in the opening game against Chicago. As much as I’d love to see them in the SB, I’m not betting anything on it.
December 10, 2019 at 3:12 pm #56661caseyParticipantmade a point of coming over to the Bills sidelines and telling more than one person that the Bills have “a great team.” Class act. Some Bills and Ravs exchanged hopes to meet one another again in the playoffs.
As for Josh, he doesn’t handle great blitzes with consistency yet. When he does, watch out because his terrific running ability comes into play. And the Ravs blitz almost 50 percent of the time, most in the NFL. That speaks to their secondary which they can depend on to hold up their end. I think the NFL has more intriguing teams this year than I can recall .
On another front, the college game features some wonderful QBs. so the lower end NFL teams can start salivating over the likes of LSU’s Burrows, Bama’s Tua and Clemson’s Lawrence, just to name a few.December 11, 2019 at 12:11 am #56663PattiParticipantand could not say enough about his respect for Josh Allen and the Bills. He likes Josh a lot, and has no doubt about his future with the Bills. He believes he’s with the right team, and personally I couldn’t agree more. Once he feels out a teams defensive moves and how to get around them, I guarantee he will show some great moves himself, and we know, as will every other team, just how difficult he will be to take down once he perfects his run game. I’m seeing him right up there when it comes to the success of these young QBs today.
On a sadder note, I suspected, but now I’m sure and so is Lamar and some of our defensive starters that teams may be intentionally going after his legs with the low tackles, which is pretty dangerous to him. He’s nursing a bad quad bruise today which, although resulting in a 15 yard penalty for roughing the passer at the time, has him now questionable for Thursday night, although I’m betting the farm that unless I see him walk out on crutches, he will be suited up and ready to go against the Jets. I’m just afraid that if some of our big boys think he’s being targeted for injury rather than making a lawful tackle, there will be more fights than I would care to see in football, so I truly hope that doesn’t happen. In any case, it would not surprise me to see R.G. III suited up and ready to go in when or if the need arises.
