what I was referring to is that I believe it was said that he works the night shift (not every night as many don’t work every night) and he gets vacation time as all employees do. I know several couples with children where the husband works night shift (early or late) and can help with the kids during the day when they are home. I’m sure Ali has some type of child care besides her husband though.

I did personnel work so have seen it all with the employee’s pay in my state at least (and what the taxpayers pay for these wages). I knew one employee who paid for a sail boat with their over time in two snow seasons (winter) – and we aren’t talking a dingy – we’re talking a Fancy Face. And I have an ultimate respect for police, CHP and firefigters – they of all people should have the time off and higher wages. And night shift gets even more $$$ than day shift BTW. Graveyard and even swing shift is difficult to deal with even at a younger age, especially with a high stress job like an officer of the law. I’m sure Ali’s husband does spend a lot of time with their children.
February 24, 2011 at 12:37 pm #21191BonbonParticipantI know that they also can take unpaid leave if they want to. I don’t know how much or how often but my friend used to do that occasionally. His wife had a good job and between them they made very good money so financially, it wasn’t a problem for them.
I’d guess it’s the same thing with Ali. Especially since he’s been with the CHP for quite some time (it’s gotta be at least 10 years or more). He probably gets at least four weeks vacation and taking the unpaid leave, that would give them quite a bit of time to travel or whatever.
February 24, 2011 at 11:18 pm #21212luckeyParticipantworking as a secretary at a state university and we sure didn’t have perks like that! I do know that our state’s fire and police have a union and they’re benefits are different from what mine were; but, I don’t know if they rise to that extent.
February 25, 2011 at 12:33 am #2121453tdogsParticipantsee the perks state, city, county, etc., get…I never joined the union but I still had to pay them $50+ bucks (fair share) or so a month for 30 years to work in my career field. I’ve railed about the costs to the taxpayers years and years…because our taxes here are unbelievable in this state, when we sink into the ocean – it won’t be because of an earthquake, it will be because of our tax burden.
February 25, 2011 at 1:29 pm #21223BonbonParticipantMy property taxes here in Florida are FOUR times higher than they were in CA for the same size house.
February 25, 2011 at 10:25 pm #2124153tdogsParticipantcorrect?? and we do…you guys should try and get the Prop. 13 tax (1% at purchase cost) like we have here in Florida (your state has been hit as bad as us with the housing bubble disaster).
February 25, 2011 at 10:53 pm #21246BonbonParticipantto Prop 13 (Save Our Homes) so that helps. And our sales tax (in my county anyway) is only 6%. You know, I don’t know if there’s sales tax on homes or not. I’ve never really noticed. And we don’t have state income tax. But everything else costs just as much as it did in CA. It didn’t when I first moved here but it caught up very rapidly.
The thing I hated when I first came here (in 2000) was you could still smoke in restaurants. Thankfully, they’ve come to their senses and gotten rid of that. But you can still smoke on the restaurant’s patio. I hate that because of the great outdoor weather here, I like to eat outside but not if I have to have smoke blowing in my face while I’m eating.
I guess this topic really should be in the Pub, huh?
