I don’t watch the show but know some of you do. I was just wondering what you thought of Ellen and what kind of job she did.
Also, I understand they are "seriously" considering Howard Stern for Simon’s replacement. My first reaction was, "NO WAY!" They’d lose viewers in droves. But after I thought about it for awhile, I thought, if he could clean up his mouth and act, he just might do a good job. He’s very intelligent, opinionated (like Simon) and not afraid to say what he thinks (like Simon). What’s your reaction to him as a replacement?
February 15, 2010 at 3:41 pm #10528NoraParticipantI only saw Ellen the first week, Im going to miss it this week too, but I liked her I thought she did a great job and fits in very well.
February 15, 2010 at 5:00 pm #10529PattiParticipantshe throws some comedy in here and there, but mostly she’s pretty honest and fair. I find that in most instances I can agree with her critique; whereas the other gal just grates on my nerves most of the time. If it wasn’t for Randy Jackson, I don’t think she would even have an opinion. She just spins what he says and makes it her own. As for Simon, I thought I heard something about Howie Mandell being his replacement; maybe that, too, was just a joke, but Ellen did say that if they hired Howard Stern, she would quit, and it did not seem to be a joke…I think she meant it. I still do feel, however, that the judges….ALL of the judges….should be required to have some background in music; otherwise, anyone could sit up there and give an opinion. I don’t think Simon Cowell is replaceable, but that’s just my opinion. He may be rude, crude and, in many instances, lascivious, but mostly he’s ‘spot-on.’
February 15, 2010 at 7:10 pm #10533GoodyParticipantYou could not pay me enough to get me to watch or listen to Howard Stern. I don’t like his ideas or his foul mouth.

February 16, 2010 at 12:09 pm #10538BonbonParticipantI think Howie was their first choice but then Stern approached them for the job. From what I’ve read, no decision has been made. I just find it ironic that they would even consider someone who is so intensly disliked by such a large part of their audience.
On the other hand, as much as I thoroughly detest him, I’ve seen him in an interview a long time ago where he was a very decent human being, displaying an amazing intellect, and an interesting conversationalist. That’s why I said, if he could clean up his act (and keep it clean) he might be a very good judge. The only problem is, would the viewers give him a chance in the first place? I don’t think so.
February 16, 2010 at 8:07 pm #10551TopazParticipantHe also needs a good haircut. Stern is long past the age when long locks look good on a guy.
February 17, 2010 at 5:59 am #10568IzzyBParticipantAnd I never have, but honestly from everything I read, this show will not go on much longer. I predict in three years max it will be cancelled. Changing of the hosts and the concept getting old is going to cause many people to stop watching.
For me that is fine, I would love some more quality progamming on the TV. I doubt it will happen any time soon. I mean NBC’s replacement for Leno is just awful. Talk about shows that won’t do much better than Leno did! Whatever happened to some good drama or comedies? I mean I like some reality TV, but I think they have just taken it too far.
February 18, 2010 at 2:20 pm #10598caseyParticipantThe Stern on his shows – rooting out the most salacious details from his guests – off camera/radio has been described by those who know him as a pretty nice and even “sweet” guy.
Now no way would I ever endorse his media material, but I agree he is no dummy and can be very interesting and entertaining. I would not rule him out as an Idol judge with possibilities.February 18, 2010 at 3:08 pm #10599majencoParticipantThat out of the way, it does fascinate me that he watches and would consider being on Idol as it is considered "dorky" by most of his target audience. I do think the show would be interesting with him. He is honest and intelligent so it could be a success if he was given a fair shot. I do agree that he could use a haircut. At the age of 56 it’s time to get over the whole wannabe rock star look.
February 18, 2010 at 3:24 pm #10600IzzyBParticipantWhen he was still on normal radio I would once and awhile catch it. I was actually surprised, he really is very smart and has many intelligent conversations on his show. For all the hype it gets, I didn’t think it was too bad. I think shortly after I discovered this, he was then moved off of normal radio. I honestly think most people that do not like him either have never watched his show, or if they did watch it, they didn’t watch it long enough (more than 30 minutes). No I would not let my child listen to his show, but I am of the opinion it is the parents responsibility to know what their child is listening to or watching on TV. So that may be why I didn’t mind his show, because I think we censor too much. If I am watching the Daily Show at 11 PM at night, why should he have to bleep bad words? No kid should be up at 11 PM and if they are, well that is bad parenting and I am sure in those situations the kids are subject to a lot more than a sh*t or f*ck word here and there.
February 18, 2010 at 4:33 pm #10602PattiParticipantoften more than foul … downright vulgar language, as well as his exploitation of the female anatomy, and females in general. You can have the brain of Thomas Edison, but it doesn’t make you a likable individual if you have unfavorable or unsavory qualities that overshadow your intellect. I think Howard Stern is in that category. He has always, always exploited women, speaking of them in a very foul manner, and disguised it as comedy (at least on his show anyway), and it’s for that reason that I believe the general public would not accept him on a very popular, highly rated reality show that, let’s face it, millions of young people DO watch. Where do you think most of the votes come from? If it ever did happen, I’m sure he would have to sign some sort of agreement to tone his comments down considerably, and I’m not so sure he could ever do that when he is put in the position of critiquing these young people.
February 18, 2010 at 4:56 pm #10604BonbonParticipantI would occasionally watch his show when he was on TV. It was like watching a train wreck and was frequently so vile and disgusting I couldn’t look away to see how much worse it could get. And I’d say that was the rule rather than the exception. I didn’t know how Robin could stand to be on there with him and endure all the female degradation. I think his show appeals mainly to the purient interests of the young teen-age boys and the just plain dirty old men.
As to his hair, I’ve seen him with short hair and have to admit, he does look better with it long. Maybe because it detracts from his big nose.
February 18, 2010 at 5:00 pm #10605IzzyBParticipantI caught it on good days. I was never offended by any of his comments about females. Now I do know by the time I watched he had toned down his language quite a bit, so that could be it too.
Considering it is prime time, he would have to be on his best behavor, because I agree. A show like Idol should be PG as it is primetime and it currently is watched by many young viewers. Because of his reputation, I doubt they would put him on the show since many parents would not allow their kids to watch the show even though he would have to tone down his language.
Now would it be entertaining to have him on the show, sure. Heck I might even watch a couple episodes to see how he acts. I won’t watch the whole season, as I feel the show can get boring just being singers, but that is my personal opinion and I know it is not shared by the majority of the US. I remember back when star search was on, I wish I had a Tivo back then. I would always go to the bathroom, or something when the singers were on. I loved that show, but I hated the singing part.
February 18, 2010 at 5:35 pm #1060753tdogsParticipantHoward Stern and these so called edgy shows (like the show in the news the past few nights "Family Guy"), et al., dun down the American public for the NWO – just as the NEA/schools have set a lower bar for the education of American school children for the last thirty years instead of raising it so that American’s are the best competitor in the world market.
Anytime one has to reduce ones self to debase and foul language instead of finding another way to express one’s self, it shows a marked lack of education, and class. Discourse in an intelligent way of communicaton, it is enlightening, not gutteral. Thomas Jefferson (1816) said: If a nation expects to be ignorant — and free — in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.
February 18, 2010 at 6:41 pm #10608IzzyBParticipantEducation has gone down in this country. I should know, I live in Florida and I can’t believe what goes on in this state and the education level that graduates come out at. I laugh at the no child left behind, because it was based on Florida’s school system which was ranked very low. But I will get off my soapbox on that one.
I don’t think it is all foul language shows that dumb down our country. Even our news programs dumb down the American population. I laugh at the things my Aunt tells my mom. She watches a news program (I won’t say which one) and all the do is say "one-liners", "slogans". etc. instead of facts. They flat out LIE to the American people to prove their point of view. If you check their so called facts at an unbiased place, they are wrong. I don’t think Americans have a chance to not be ignorant with news programs like that. I would love for news organization to actually dig into these bills and do two hour specials on some of these complex bills. They can explain them in a factual way, but for some reason our news organizations don’t think we can handle news like that. We can only handle the biased one-liners. I really wish the news organizations will go back to journalism and researching stories. How about they uncover the truth and report that truth in detail. Maybe that would make us less ignorant. One can dream, right?
My husband watches many foul language programs including the Family Guy. He is actually very smart. He also watches the History channel, discovery, etc. Because of everything he watches and reads he is a very well rounded individual. Shows like the family guy have their place, as in they are entertainment for some people. I don’t think we need to take those things away from people. We just need to find a way to make other programming more truthful and have some educational value to them.
