I got a nice Amazon gift certificate for my b.day (love my kids!) and am thinking of getting a Kindle.  I’ve heard good things from a couple of people but was wondering if anybody here has one and, if so, what they think of it.

for myself for quiet a while now as my eyes can’t handle books anymore – even with a good prescription for eyeglass and BIG print books.  My good friend got a B&N Nook for her BD in Oct. and she loves it (she got a color version recently).  I also heard that book stores are going out of business left and right because of all the EReaders.  Amazon does have a lot of free classic’s that can be downloaded.  Think B&N does too – there are several EReaders out on the market now but Kindle and Nook are leaders in features and selection of their books from what I’ve researched.

In the meantime, I discovered Audible.com – you can download books onto Ipod, computer, or burn CD’s etc. of audible books – I like that because I can listen to it at night before I fall asleep – just like reading a book.  But you can turn out the light and listen to them – book mark where you left off, things like that.  The price isn’t bad either for the books (you don’t pay for Audible), they have different levels of pricing, depending on how many books you purchase but so far I’ve gotten newer books for $4.95 and best sellers for $7.95 – and they are yours forever just like a book.  They have some freebies too.  I just got O’Henry Christmas tale for a Christmas present from Audible. I have a ton of books as I would rather read than breath I think, and I guess with the exception of my Bible, I will give them to friends, or donate to charity.  There’s only one set from my favorite author Dianna Gabaldon and her "Outlander" series that I would keep for my hard cover books, but I’ve already started downloading her books on Audible too.

My worst nightmare is like in the  first Twilight Zone episode called "Time Enough At Last" where this bookworm just wants to read, and work, a naggy wife, a mean boss will not give him time to read.  Then the "H" bomb goes off and he’s (for him) in a perfect world, all the food, no one around to bug him and a library to do what he wants to do – Read…then the twist comes…he breaks his glasses.  Maybe we need to get writers on Day’s to take the storylines to a half an hour like Rod Serling did…LOL!

on sale – did you hear about it?  And they say they have 1.8 million free (pre-1923 copy right) books – lot’s of classics there.

I believe it was Burgess Meridith who played the role.  Very good.  Those were some real classics on that show.  Rod Serling’s was a very brilliant mind.

I looked at the Nook but don’t feel I need color for reading books and I don’t think I’d use it for anything else.  And, yes, I did know about the drop in price.  I can get by with the $139 one as I have wireless network and don’t need the 3G.

I usually buy all my books used from Amazon so don’t usually spend the $9.95 they charge for new ones.  That and my women’s club has a book exchange which keeps me in books from now until kingdom come.  But, like you, I’m having more and more difficulty reading them.  I looked at my friend’s Kindle and it’s VERY reader friendly.  Plus you don’t get cramps in your fingers keeping a paperback open.

Any, thanks for your input.  Hey, DeeLan, have you been asked to review an EReader yet?

I’ve tried but nobody wants to offer me one. I did put the Nook on my wish list this year though. I’d settle for a pre-owned refurbished which is a LOT cheaper.  The Wi-Fi is only $99 and the 3G I think is $119.

I even thought about the Sony eReader because you download the books to your computer and then use a USB connection to get them to the Reader but it didn’t do as well in the ratings.  The Kindle still ranks highest with Nook right behind.  I like Christian Fiction and buy most of my books at CBD.com (Christian Book Distributers).  I usually look for books less than $5 and have gotten some for $1.99 but the shipping is $3.99 and they have eBooks for $2.99-$3.99 so I’d be spending less for them. CBD’s books won’t work on the Kindle but do on the Nook and Sony.

as well as GK Chesterton’s writings – I’ll have to see if they are on Audible.com too.  Would be interesting to see how they would do either of these.  Especially since the Narnia series is out in movie form now.
