Just had here for a short visit of my grandniece, her DH, 10-year old daughter and 8-year old son. This was their last stop (they are from Reno) in the US in their two-year around the world adventure. I was amazed they only have one carry-on and one backpack each…FOR TWO YEARS! That includes home schooling materials, cold weather hiking gear, wet suits, toiletries and anything else you need to live for two years on the road. I’d need one of those just for my shoes!!! I can’t comprehend that but give them credit for their creativity.

It was sad to see them go but I’m so excited for them. They have a blog that they will keep us all up-dated on. I can’t wait to read the first entry. They are leaving Ft. Lauderdale in 2 hours for San Jose, Costa Rica. Among a lot of places, they will spend a month in the Galapagos Islands (SO jealous!), hiking the Inca Trail, backpacking in Patagonia. And that’s just part of the Western Hemisphere journey. Can you ever imagine such an undertaking?

I get the impression you might have done this in your younger years. You sound pretty adventurous and non-conformist so maybe it runs in the family?
And yeah, ITA on Galapagos – my dream venture!

the best in their travels. It must be wonderful to just pick up and do something like that. I’m not that much of a traveler, so although it seems like a big adventure on the one hand, maybe a bit too much of the unknown for my taste. Good luck to them and I hope and pray they have safe travel.

BTW, I said grandniece. She is my niece. Don’t know why I said that. The funny thing is, when she was young she spent a tremendous amount of time at my house. Her parents threatened to bring her bed over and she said that would be okay. Maybe because I didn’t have a daughter but she’s always been very special to me.

And the funniest thing is, everybody in the family tells her how much she looks and acts like me.

She may look like me but she’s is very different. She has a PhD in nursing, is a Nurse Practitioner (if you’re not familiar, that is very close to being an MD and can do pretty much anything an MD can do including qualify as a PCP) and is a professor at U. of Nevada, Reno. I guess you can tell how proud of her I am. :o)

…yet. That may change when they get to Africa (she’s going to be teaching women’s health issues in Somalia which she had previously done on an Indian reservation to help pay off student loans). Or maybe some of the places in Asia. Not sure of that itinerary yet.

BTW, her husband is also a teacher. He just left his job as head master at a private boy’s school. They have quite a few voluntary things like that planned along the way.
