"Soap Opera Digest can report exclusively that John Martin, who is best known to soap fans as Y&R’s Frederick (2002-2005) and SUNSET BEACH’s Hank (1997-1999), has been cast as Bill Horton for the upcoming on-air farewell to Frances Reid (ex-Alice) in June. The previous actors to play Bill — Ed Mallory (1968-1976) and Christopher Stone (1987-88; 1994) — have sadly both passed away. Martin briefly appeared in Salem in 1985 as a character named Robert."

hmm…. I don’t know about this, since Bill doesn’t have a connection anymore, but it should be interesting to see him with Lucas and Jennifer.
April 24, 2010 at 11:20 am #12401BonbonParticipantI don’t see any reason to recast a character just to bring him back for Alices funeral. It’s not the characters we want to see returning, it’s the actors.
And I didn’t know Ed Malory had passed away. To me, he was always Bill, I never cared for Christopher Stone.
April 24, 2010 at 11:57 am #12402SWParticipantother children so even if the actors playing their parts are alive, you can’t have them return after they died on the show. Since they still talk about Bill, they would have to have a good reason for him not to come. My guess is also that it somehow plays into the story they are doing "prior to" Alice passing away. It will probably be a review of Laura and Bill’s relationship since Laura is also returning. Interesting that they picked a "dark-haired" actor to play the role when I thought Bill was a blond? Of course if he’s gone gray, it would be hard to tell.
April 24, 2010 at 2:09 pm #12405DebbiParticipantIt does seem silly to recast this role for a few episodes. Has anyone heard when they are going to start this storyline?
April 24, 2010 at 2:12 pm #12406PattiParticipantI want to see the actor’s (vet’s) return more than I do the character. Ed Mallory will always be Bill Horton to me, just like John Clarke will always have been Mickey. They’ve made past excuses for important relatives not being at an event, whether it was a marriage, a funeral, or whatever; they should have done this with Bill. On the other hand, I would really like to see the return of more Hortons. That’s how the show started out with the two dominant families being the Bradys and the Hortons. I know Christie Clark will be coming back as Carrie, is Mike Horton coming back, and who will be playing Mike? There have been several actors in that role. Whoever it is, though, it will be interesting to see that interaction.
April 24, 2010 at 5:19 pm #12412GrockieParticipantthe Brady family was not on the show in the beginning. Looks like 1983 when Bo, Caroline, Shawn Sr. came. And remember in the beginning, it was 30 minute show. They didn’t need a large cast.
April 24, 2010 at 6:29 pm #12415PattiParticipantyou’re absolutely correct, Grockie. Thanks for the reminder.
April 24, 2010 at 6:57 pm #1239953tdogsParticipantBill, (again), which IMO is dumb…are they going to recast our other favorites who can’t make it to Alice’s memorial service/show? Nope, don’t like this idea one bit…
April 24, 2010 at 10:07 pm #12418SWParticipanthe was the last actor to play Mike Horton. Laura is also returning. Jennifer is already back taping according to my Soap Opera Digest. The big stuff will be happening in June but the start of it is May sweeps.
April 25, 2010 at 7:16 am #12422bryenParticipantI understand that they want to go all out for the tribute to Alice. I always hate it when they say so and so is stuck at the airport because of bad weather. On the other side, do we really need a recast? Isn’t the point of all the vets returning so we can see flashbacks? Perhaps they are doing a recast of Bill to maybe keep him around or bring him back for future guest spots. Although I would like to see Maggie paired with Victor – maybe they want to test the chemistry out between Maggie and newBill?
Also I’m really surprised they don’t have Marlena, John, Jack, Abby or Shawn, Bell and Claire returning. I was hoping to see them.
April 25, 2010 at 12:02 pm #12424SWParticipantold "Bill Horton" is going to look. Just playing with the ages: Will is 16 add Lucas was 19=35 now and since Bill was already a doctor when he and Kate had Lucas and Mike was already in his teens (I go low on this one), Bill would have to have been at least 35 when Lucas was born, making him around 70 years old! I bet he’ll only be in his 50s though when he returns!
I also wonder if he’ll be paired with Maggie or Laura?
April 25, 2010 at 1:13 pm #12430DeeLanParticipantWhy couldn’t they just do as they did with Mickey’s funeral. Have those not on screen in the kitchen or mention them being there earlier. They could even have someone sitting at Alice’s bedside talking to her as Bill but not show his face. There’s no way they’re going to get those flashback scenes with a new Bill since a lot of those actors/characters aren’t around anymore.
April 25, 2010 at 6:00 pm #12435kprstrsParticipantThey will never be able to please everyone, so I will just ‘roll with it’! At least they are not just saying she went upstairs and died…they will be giving her a great send off!
April 25, 2010 at 6:11 pm #12436GoldenDaysFanParticipantThe families don’t feel real if only a small number of the family show up for a funeral of a major character. I really hated the "stuck at the airport" line as an excuse for an adult child not showing. Maybe the new Bill will be the one to read a tribute to Alice. That would be a nice touch.
April 26, 2010 at 12:20 pm #12441PattiParticipantwill be missed, the problem I see is with the flashbacks, which I read the tribute storyline will be loaded with. Guess we won’t be seeing any of Bill.
