Bryan R. Dattilo (Lucas) opens up to Digest about leaving Salem. "I have no bad feelings at all toward anybody," he says. "I don’t feel like I’ve been wronged. I just kind of feel like it happened because it needed to happen. The show is a great show and always will be. I hope it lasts long and I hope that the ratings are soaring and I wish nothing but good for everyone there. I love everyone there." As for why he didn’t go back to film his last episode, he explains, "I had one more episode to do after the vacation when Gary [Tomlin, co-executive producer] told me they weren’t renewing my contract. And in the scenes, I literally had two lines and came in at the end of the scene and said something to Rafe like, ‘Leave Sami alone,’ then walked away. It was very uneventful and Gary even said, ‘You don’t need to come in for that last episode if you don’t want to.’ At the time, I was like, ‘No, I’ll come in; that’s cool.’ And then when I got home and read the episode, where I really didn’t say much and nothing happened, I thought, ‘If that’s going to be my last episode, I don’t want to go out like that.’ " For the full interview with Dattilo, check out an upcoming issue of Digest.

He’s such a cool, kind hearted guy. Here’s hoping he finds a better opportunity somewhere else. I’ll miss him!
January 8, 2010 at 6:25 am #931753tdogsParticipantHe deserved better after all the years that he was in the show…granted they didn’t write any decent story lines for him in the last few years but it seems like "Days" treats a lot of their vetrans like this, i.e., Diedre, Drake, "Patch and Kayla", etc., etc. And it hurts us fans too – because these "people" become important in our lives as we all set aside one or so hours of time in our daily or weekly busy schedules to invite them in. I would think that the show would reward loyalty to the actors and to the fans by at least having a decent closure to a charaters life.
January 8, 2010 at 12:58 pm #9321BonbonParticipantIt seems that companies have no loyalty anymore to their veteran employees. Where I worked (before I retired) when things got rough, they laid off two people who had been with them for OVER 30 YEARS! Along with many others with nothing but two weeks severance pay. That was instrumental in my decision to retire. Get out before they toss me out.
I have friends/acquaintences who’ve lost their jobs after many years with their employers. And in every case, it’s been, "Thanks…good-bye!" One good friend lost her job and two weeks later, so did her husband. We’ve got the same thing here with our very own Jade. Personally, I think it’s sinful! But, you have to understand they are in business to make money and when they are not making it, they have to make cuts. It ain’t fair but that’s the way it is.
January 8, 2010 at 3:27 pm #9329DeeLanParticipantI think they get rid of the vetarans because they don’t know what to write for them anymore. They’ve put them in a box and can’t figure out how to get them out so they toss them out. Bringing in new characters is like having a blank canvas and they can write them anyway they want. The problem is, they get into the same rut and continue the bad writing and making family connections with the established families they’re now in a smaller box than the vetaran they got rid of. So, they need to bring in another clean canvas but don’t have the money so get rid of someone else.
Rinse and repeat……
January 8, 2010 at 5:53 pm #9334loritrollParticipantI’ve always loved Lucas. I was a HUGE Lumi person for years. But, became a EJami and Safe fan since then. But, the chemistry between Sami and Lucas remains and I really enjoyed their episodes as friends. They have a unique and special bond and I really wish they had found a way to build on that and create a brand new role for Lucas. He had a big fan base and such potential for a good storyline. I think he would be a valued player in the upcoming storyline for Maggie as well. So sad.
January 8, 2010 at 7:09 pm #9345kayParticipantDays won’t last much longer I suspect. Fans have had enough and some have already quit watching. Maybe that’s what they want.
January 8, 2010 at 7:10 pm #9346justwonderingParticipantThis has happened to Bryan at least 2 times before. He was let go and then later on came back. You are right they don’t know what to do with him. He could have been a important part of the upcoming Maggie story, being there for her like she has been so many times with him!! Also could have been helpful to Sami when this kidnapping truth comes out. I had always hoped it would turn out that Johnny was relly Lucas’s son. DOn’t know why wirters do what they do.
January 8, 2010 at 11:14 pm #9394kayParticipantThey’ve obviously been reading the wrong message boards for the last couple years.
January 10, 2010 at 6:54 pm #9461Ms. JakeParticipantIt’s sad…even Chelsea had a much better send off then our veteran actors.
January 10, 2010 at 8:00 pm #946453tdogsParticipantMarlena and John’s sudden departure.
January 10, 2010 at 8:21 pm #9465BonbonParticipant…that the way these characters seem to vanish into thin air is a way for TPTB to keep their options open for the future? There’s no particular reason why I would think that’s what they are doing but it’s possible…isn’t it? But maybe they’re figuring the’ll want Bryan/Lucas back sometime.
January 10, 2010 at 10:57 pm #947153tdogsParticipantthe last couple of times Lucas was off the show – they gave some kind of explanation – burned in that fire (can’t remember the SL on that one), and the last time was rehab right? Most of the other characters either move to England, Switzerland or Africa or even go to the "looney bin" or a cave under Stephano’s mansion but at least we "know" they are tucked away there. So that at least knowing that the story is alluding that there is a possiblity of a return…I don’t like when the characters just diappear into thin air – not fair! Especially the ones that we really know and have come into our homes for years and years.
January 10, 2010 at 11:30 pm #9473SWParticipantmail a letter – never to be seen or mentioned again! That seems like the way they are doing things again. Maybe Lucas will be talked about like he’s there but never seen? Sort of like Alice and Mickey have been lately. No real end to the character or explanation of where he is or why.
January 10, 2010 at 11:55 pm #9475CatLady54ParticipantHe was off for a while when they put him in jail in order to push the pairing of Sami & EJ.
Lumi fan forever!
January 11, 2010 at 12:00 am #9476CatLady54ParticipantWe should be thanking our lucky stars that when they killed of Mickey last week, it wasn’t in a car accident because they would have put Alice, Julie, Doug, Lucas and any other vet in the car with him to get rid of them. (They would probably have Steve, Kayla, Doc, John, Shawn & Belle in the car too.)
I am hoping that this will be like the previous times that they let Bryan go, and he will be back soon.
