Today marks my 10 year cancerversary! 10 years ago today the doctor called us and told us that I had a very rare cancer called Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor or GIST for short. I’ve had probably a handful of close calls, last year being the most recent. but I’m still here! SO take that and shove it cancer! LOL.
March 21, 2011 at 3:36 pm #21931PattiParticipantThat’s the spirit! Congrats on your 10-yr cancerversary — love that word. May God bless you and keep you cancer free.
March 21, 2011 at 6:04 pm #21933BonbonParticipantI firmly believe that your attitude has a lot to do with your survival. And you’ve got all our prayers, of course.
A good friend of mine just had to return for more chemotherapy. She’s been fighting lukemia and lymphoma for over ten years now. On top of that, she also contracted melanoma and has had part of her nose removed. (It kind of looks like Michael Jackson’s and of course we tease her about that.) But she’s got the greatest attitude, never stops going and always smiling. God bless you both!
This same woman is chairman of American Cancer Society’s (the orginazation I’m painting the chairs for) Relay for Life and at our last women’s club meeting, she asked everyone who has had cancer to raise their hand. Half of the women in the room did. Pretty scary. What we did was decorate a paper bag and write a person’s name that we know who’s had cancer on it, survivor or not. Then at the relay, they make them into luminarias and line the school track with them. It’s quite impressive and very touching. You can’t help but get teary-eyed when you see all those candles burning as the people walk around the track.

You are so young, (as you’ve shared your age with me), and myself as an oldster have shown me that our younger generation you are caring, concerned, very positive and full of life! I pray that you to have another 7 decades (that would get you into your hundredth year) and have celebrated life with a cancer free anniversary for each of those years!
Hugs and love to you!

March 21, 2011 at 9:06 pm #21943NoraParticipantThanks guys, that means alot. you guys mean so much to me. its weird how we never met in person but we talk everyday. i feel as close to you all as i do friends i’ve known since kindergarden! i know i talk to you guys more than I do talk to my friends! lol. Sorry to hear about your friend Bonbon, will keep her in my prayers. i was "lucky" to get this type of cancer becuase i didnt take traditional chemo. thank God. main reason being this type doesnt respond to traditional chemo but still. yeah it is scary even with how rare my cancer is there are more and more people being diagnosed with it. at least more and more people and doctors are becoming more aware of it. but there are still doctors out there that have never even heard of it.
And Pam, I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you too. i love talking foodnetwork with you! did you watch next great restaurant and chopped this week???
you guys !

Many who are on this board and have been over the last several years will remember that we prayed for my sister over the last 4 1/2 years that she fought the good fight. Unfortunatley, she passed on February 24 and we are just devastated. So, whenever I read about Nora or someone like her, I celebrate their victory! God bless each and every one who is traveling this challenging road and for their loved ones who are traveling it with them.
March 22, 2011 at 4:53 pm #21972NoraParticipantThank you Luckey, So sorry to hear about your sister. Praying for you and your family.
March 22, 2011 at 5:01 pm #21975PattiParticipantmany of us were offering our prayers for your sister, and for you and your family as well. I am deeply sorry for your loss. I pray that God, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, will console you and your entire family in your time of grief.
