out this past week: I can see already changes with this upcoming heath care thing – my doctor had to go to a seminar on Thursday and Friday regarding electronic health files – I discussed it with her when I saw her on Wednesday afternoon.
She told me that the government can request any medical files on anyone from any doctor at any time and that if the doctor does not comply by sending files within an hour – the fines to the doctor will start. They can send a doctor a request for any patient who say is for example obese, diabetic, or has heart issues, etc., so if say the doctor has five hundred patients, and 30% of them have any of the issues requested by the government, the doctor has to send the files on these patients.
So I see this as (and if no one else does, read history), it’s just a matter of time before they (government) will deny care for patients that cost more than they are "worth". And if the doctor is not up on the electronic files for their patients, the doctor can/will be fined a very large amount of money so doctor’s are hard pressed to fight this too. The government is funding all mandatory electronic file transfers with computers, training, etc., for the medical records. BIG BROTHER is here! And there is nothing anyone can say to convince me otherwise – when the sacred bond of doctor – patient confidentiality is broken by the government – we are screwed.

She’d told me her uncle was diagnosed with cancer and the government looked at his age and other health problems to figure his life expectancy and decided he got 2 chemo treatments and that was it.
I can see this as the beginning of that happening here. "Oh, based on your medical problems and history you’re probably going to die in 3 years so we’re only going to invest $X for your care". That’s government run healthcare for you. Forget Quality of Life, they look at Quantity

I think we’re all in trouble in our old age (and maybe much younger)…there is a curve that Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, health adviser to the PTB, he has written extensively about who should get medical care, who should decide, and whose life is worth saving (Google him for more info on this – Ezekiel Emanuel blames the Hippocratic Oath for the ‘overuse’ of medical care.)
"Principles for Allocation of Scarce Medical Interventions" The Lancet, January 31, 2009
So true about other countries health care, that’s why everyone comes here. I say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I think Mel and the little nurse at St. Mary’s open discussion of a patient is only the beginning of bad medical practices either in Salem or real life.
Maybe this is so near and dear to me, because I’m going to the downside of his curve because of my age, yet I planned and paid for my health care specifically for my old age all my working life.
On the plus side, maybe I should move to Salem, people come back from the dead there all the time, they must have great health care!
August 16, 2010 at 11:31 am #15452BonbonParticipantMy first question is what possible reason would the government (except for a law enforcement agency working on a case) have a need for someone’s medical records?
August 16, 2010 at 8:21 pm #1546353tdogsParticipantand yes, it is true…just start with the doctor in my post (with the graph) by googling or binging – but be prepared for watcha read – it’s scary -…take two asprin and call me in the morning when above the age of 50…
