Since when did Chloe become Catholic? When she first met Father What-his-name, the first thing she said to him was that she wasn’t Catholic. But now she’s getting married by him and asking to go to confession to boot??? WTH?
June 15, 2010 at 11:14 am #13658justwonderingParticipantIt’s all about the plot!!! That was the first thing that entered my mind. But I still don’t get it—she was married to Brady and divorced and then Lucas. SO I can’t figure out how she could marry in the church anyway!
June 15, 2010 at 2:51 pm #13666mommytutuParticipantand said the same thing. Since when do non-Catholics go to confession? Also, twice divorced doesn’t equal Catholic wedding. The writers are worthless!
June 15, 2010 at 11:04 pm #13680SWParticipanteither time. Then, I think she could be married by a priest.
June 16, 2010 at 12:02 pm #13689imported_JennMParticipantI know some have gone to the trouble of annulment – which isn’t as difficult as it used to be anymore (but it’s still a complicated process and takes quite a bit of time).
That’s the one thing that bugs me in Salem, annulments fly through all the time, some must be done out of storyline because supposed Catholics are divorcing/remarrying etc., without any paperwork snafu, or being held accountable.
***EDIT… some of the Salem annulments might be civil annulments (not religious ones) – I seem to recall some of those blue legal documents flying around where annulments were concerned. Those wouldn’t be Church documents, they’d be court documents.
Chloe may have converted. It’s implied that she has a long standing relationship with Father Matt, perhaps during her Leukemia or something?
She was correct in that she needed to go to confession before getting married, given her transgression, and Father Matt was right to refuse to marry them until she came clean on her infidelity.
I still don’t get how she could be in a state of grace with 2 divorces under her belt… but if she went ahead and got annulments… with Brady, addiction would be grounds to be granted an annulment. I wasn’t watching when she was married to Lucas, but didn’t she cheat on him with Daniel? That would be grounds for Daniel to receive an annulment, but when Father Matt came to Chloe yesterday, he didn’t seem to understand much about Catholicism when Chloe asked for absolution, so I doubt he’d have asked the Church for an annulment if he’s not even Catholic.
The other possibility, is that if Chloe’s other marriages weren’t performed in the Catholic Church, the Church might not recognize them. I know when I married, I was married in a non-denominational service by a Pentacostal minister (so it was legal, but not officially Catholic). Years later when I wanted to have my daughter baptized in the Catholic Church, my Priest married my husband and I in the Church… making it "official" in the eyes of the Catholic Church, moments before the baptism.
So maybe divorce is OK if the marriage wasn’t done in the Catholic Church? I don’t know…

At least it didn’t in my day….unless that somehow got changed with the new order of things. So in the Church’s eyes, Chloe was never legally married, therefore they can be married by a catholic priest.
June 16, 2010 at 12:56 pm #13691caseyParticipantIf you haven’t been previously married in the Church it’s like you never were. But is Daniel supposed to be Catholic?
June 16, 2010 at 2:15 pm #13692DCola522ParticipantWeren’t Chloe & Brady married in church though? Am I mistaken on that? I remember them aging her little sister Joy, who walked down the aisle as the flower girl. ???
June 16, 2010 at 2:32 pm #13693mommytutuParticipantI recall the wedding a bit, but I am pretty sure they were married somewhere like a restaurant or hotel or someone’s home. For some reason I don’t remember a church. Maybe Jason’s page will have more info.
June 16, 2010 at 2:36 pm #13694mommytutuParticipantShe can’t get an annulment from the Church, but still there would have to be some considerations since we are assuming Daniel is Catholic. I was married in the Catholic Church (was Catholic) and my husband was divorced. However, he was married by a Justice of the Peace which is not recognized as "being married." I believe if he had been married in a church of any religion we would have had to get some sort of dispensation so that we could be married in church.
June 16, 2010 at 3:45 pm #13696DeeLanParticipantIf I remember correctly Chloe met Father Matt when she was engaged to Lucas and fooling around with Daniel on the side. She met him in the park. Not sure if she was sitting and crying and he came to her or they just happened to be on the same park bench but she talked his ear off. At the time she was going to marry Lucas, Father Matt told her he wouldn’t perform the ceremony untill she confessed all to him. Much the same way the priest told Belle she wouldn’t marry her and Shawn until she confessed all to him but she lied and said she did when she really hadn’t.
I’m thinking Father Matt is probably sorry for the day he started talking to her.
June 16, 2010 at 9:48 pm #13704SWParticipanteven if he is Catholic, it would be okay. Once a partner passes away, the ’til death do us part’ kicks in so it’s okay to marry again.
June 16, 2010 at 10:51 pm #13706ellenkbParticipantbecause they only want to pay for one church set (LOL!) But we know that the Hortons, Bradys, DiMieras, Hernandez’s and the Kiriakis’s are Catholic (I guess Greek Othodox is close enough) . Marie Horton was a nun, right? John Black was a priest for a while. Sami lived at the convent. I’m actually kind of surprised that the hospital is not a Catholic one! But you guys bring up good points about the number of divorces! Yikes!
June 17, 2010 at 12:32 am #13710bradysgmaParticipantWhat about Marlens Evans? Weren’t she & John married in the Catholic Church even though she was married and divorced several times? Weren’t all or most of her previous marriages in the Church? The last time she and John got married, before they left the show, who performed the wedding? (or was it just renewing their wedding vows?)
June 17, 2010 at 12:48 am #1371153tdogsParticipantSeems to me I remember seeing crosses/cruicifixes on the walls in hallways or was that another show somewhere in my mind? Or am I thinking of St. Mary’s Hospital that they used to show in Salem?
And on the subject of Chloe (and I am only halfway through yesterday’s show) where she is in confession with the priest – so she may have mentioned this and I just haven’t gotten to it yet…but shouldn’t she mention that she had the intention of murdering Carly by having her plunge to her death in the elevator? Seems to me this would be a mortal sin she should mention…the sixth commandment – Thou shall not kill – yet she is only confessing to Thou shall not commit adultery.
