I remember when NBC cancelled Another World and many, many of the people in the newsgroup (all the NBC shows were lumped together in one newsgroup then) threated that if it was cancelled it, they’ never watch NBC again. But then, months later, a lot of them were watching Passions when it began. You know what they say, Never say never!

THIS IS PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If Johnny Carson was still around, Leno & Letterman wouldn’t have a chance!
The real tonight show. The good ol’ days. This trick has never been repeated in modern times…. Johnny Carson and Dom DeLuise. If this doesn’t bring a smile, you’re brain dead.

NBC was losing money at 10 PM because they can’t get quality programming and KEEP it. They lose all quality programming because they do not know how to advertise it, so they cancel it instead. So they figured they would put Jay there, less production costs means they don’t have to make as much money in advertising. It worked. NBC was making fine money, but in the meantime they SCREWED the affiiliates big time. Because now the news had less of a lead-in and therefore they lost HALF their viewers. The affiliates screamed about this and so NBC has to get rid of Leno at 10 PM. In the meantime, Conan got half the lead-in that Jay was getting. So in the end they also screwed Conan. His rating fall from Jay was not all his fault, in fact you can blame half it on Leno for his poor show. Do you know that Conan on many nights got MORE viewers than Leno did at 10 PM? Late night should never get more viewers than the 10 PM slot.
And yes, Jay also had worse guests because many actors and actresses refused to go on his show, because while NBC was also screwing over the affiliates they also were giving actors and actresses less jobs. Because now there was 5 hours of primetime TV that did not need actors or actresses to produce it. Most people wanted Jay to fail, so that the 5 hours would not be lost. They also wanted it to fail so that other networks did not do the same thing in the future.
NBC messed up, just like they messed up with daytime. Do you know that whenever they change from a soap to a talk show they lose viewers? It is not that a talk show or game show bring in more viewers, it costs less to produce. So in the end NBC makes more money, but they forgot one detail. How do people know which shows to watch in prime time? They see an advertisement on a daytime or news show. Well if you have less viewers watching your crappy talk show, you have less viewers seeing what is on at night. If I was a good new show, I would avoid NBC. Because they don’t have the viewers during the day or during late night (because of Jay now) to get enough viewers to know their show exists. So most new shows fail on NBC, whether they are good or not. While soaps is a dying industry, do you notice NBC has only had one soap while all the other networks have kept at least 2? Other networks know what they are doing, NBC does not. If they did, they would have NEVER put Leno on at 10 PM. Other networks though NBC was crazy for what they were doing.
I also did not watch either guy. I have never liked Jay and well, Conan is just not me. I do have to admit I did watch the last two weeks on and off, and Conan is pretty funny, when he has something to be funny about. And yes, the $4+ million was a joke, most people knew that. Other people e-mailed him telling him off for during that. Do you really think any network wouldn’t have a budget and make expenses that high not need to be approved? NBC is stupid, but not that stupid.

Conan will never say what he got, because no one wants to hear what you got to not work, it would hurt his image too much. NBC will never admit what they paid out, as all of this is a mess and they don’t want to admit what the mess cost them. So neither party will ever admit the true figures and therefore it will always be a mystery and a bunch of rumors will float around. You can read 10 articles and get 10 different figure amounts.
January 29, 2010 at 2:51 pm #10092IzzyBParticipantI said I would never watch a new show on CW after they cancelled Angel (then WB), but when Privledged came on I watched it, and well got burned (how did the awful 90210 last over this good show?!?). So then I was like never again, but I saw that Life Unexpected show and got hooked..sigh. I did last a long time though without watching any. My problem is I watch Smallville (started before Angel got cancelled) and therefore see ads for other shows.
I also said I would never watch another new show on NBC, but I love some of the actors and actresses in the new show coming up called Parenthood. So do I watch to support them, even though I would be supporting NBC too?
Always a tough decision. I will admit I have started to watch Cable networks like ABC Family, TNT, Lifetime, etc. Because they stick with their programs a little more than your NBC, CBS, ABS, etc networks.
