What chu talkin’ ’bout Wilbur? First, I thought CALPERS was supposed to be an excellent system. When I was doing pension administration a gazillion years ago, it was considered the Cadillac of plans. Did some beaucrat get his fingers in it and mess it up?
And I have NEVER had to get a referral to a specialist, on any plan I’ve ever had, of course none of them were HMO. All I do is pick out who I want to see, call ’em up and make an appointment. What has that governator been doing out there since I left? Is that just in California?
August 17, 2010 at 6:09 pm #1549353tdogsParticipantand yes, the goobenator did a lot of stuff to mess it and the rest of the state up…and "Moonbeam" is trying to get back in the game too, so you might as well write us off at the Sierras. You’re lucky! You got out of the once and proud golden state while you could! Now it’s just a cesspool…
The HMO’s remain the same, but anyone living in a "rural" area, i.e., not Sacramento, the Bay Area, LA, San Diego, etc., all had to go on a PPO with all the BS (and I’m not talking bunny shins), that went came with it, especially with the higher $$$$ costs.
August 17, 2010 at 6:11 pm #1549053tdogsParticipant$3.00 a piece!!! Bonbon remember that when you go in next week! If anything and everything is being "stimulated" and bailed out by this government – why not give money to the drug companies for R&D? We have the greatest health care in the world (for the next few months anyway), when this new HC kicks in – I think research and development is going to fly out the window. No new cancer fighting drugs, no nothing going to be developed.
And you are going to think I am crazy…but I’m going to draw this parallel anyway…when the government got involved in telling the steel and manufacturing plants what to do, they just all went away – anybody see a lot of steel plants since the 1970’s? We don’t make televisions, toasters, etc., anymore, so when this 2000+ page law hits the fan in 2014 for health care…where is our health care going? I truly believe that we will have care like Canada/European countries do, but then why do they now all come here for their medical?
August 17, 2010 at 9:08 pm #15497DeeLanParticipantI lived and worked in Chicago and we had a hospital insurance policy and had to get referrals for any specialist. I saw a bone doc for knee pain and had the referral. He wanted to give me a cortisone injection but couldn’t until I got another referral that said I could have one.
We later went to a PPO and we didn’t need referrals. I moved to southeast Alabama in 2003 and was shocked at the healthcare down here. I have to get a referral for everything no matter what insurance I have and even when I was paying out of my own pocket. It’s the docs who won’t see anyone without being referred by someone else. When I moved to a town 20 miles south of where I lived and my doc moved 30 miles north of there I switched doctors but had a hard time fining one to take me. I have rheumatoid arthritis and get migraines. A lot of docs won’t prescribe any pain meds. I also have asthma, hypertension, an underactive thyroid and diabetes. Some said I was too complex for them. Then there were several practices that the docs didn’t admit or see patients at the hospital and I refuse to be in a hospital and not be treated by my attending. I miss Chicago where I knew the docs by their first name and could call any of them and get an appointment on my own.
August 17, 2010 at 9:20 pm #1549953tdogsParticipantthen those so-called doctors shouldn’t be practicing medicine girlfriend! Good grief! I was shocked when I read your post. My medical list is a mile and a half long too but the doctor’s with the sheepskins on a wall should see any patient! If not, they should become dentists!
I would think that the doctors in the smaller areas would be more open to patients more so than the big cities, like Chicago…another scary thing coming is that if you think it’s tough to find a doctor now and you have to wait three days to get an appointment, wait until 40 million more people are in the health care system…all of this and more is coming down the road at us!
August 18, 2010 at 2:34 am #15506DeeLanParticipantWhen I moved to Alabama I saw more nurse practitioners with offices than I ever did in Chicago. Some are independent offices and some are in with doctors. I see healthcare getting to the point where you have several nurse practitioners working for 1 doctor. You go in and see the NP for routine checks and common colds. They can prescribe meds and order tests so that would be no problem. If it’s something more complex then you’ll see the actual MD but that’s going to be rare. More patients being able to be seen in a docs office and the doc doesn’t have to work as hard. That may also be a way the government can save money since it shouldn’t cost as much seeing an NP as an MD.
August 18, 2010 at 3:13 am #1550753tdogsParticipantmy questions now are:
1.) Are we going to get the same quality health care that I currently have (and am very happy with) with a N.P. as opposed to my physician who has gone through eight years of college and medical school, served four years as a intern and then done a two year rotation as resident or am I going to see an R.N. P.A. (and no slight on them – God bless their hard work and dedication)…
2.) Am I going to be paying the same dollar amount of money going to seeing a R.N. P.A. that I would seeing my physician or is my health bill going to be less? Because if it’s not, I think we’re all getting ripped off – it’s like being promised a N.Y. Broadway show and dinner at Le Circ and actually taken to a movie and McD’s for a happy meal instead…just not the same.
August 18, 2010 at 1:28 pm #15517DeeLanParticipantI’m not saying this is how it’s going to turn out but I can see it coming to that, especially with specialists. Maybe you’ll see the specialist the initial visit then all follow-ups will be with the NP.
Look at how it is now with OB’s. A lot of the visits are the nurse who weighs you and takes your vitals. You don’t see the doc with every visit. At least that’s how a lot of them were in Chicago.
In Alabama my husband was referred to a dermatologist for psoraisis. It took 5 months to get an appointment. Turns out there’s only 1 practice in this area with about 5 docs in the office but still a long time to get an appointment. If they had NP’s you’d probably be able to get in a lot sooner.
I do think the cost of a visit will go down if it turns out that way since the insurance or by that time the government won’t pay the same care for an NP as they do for a doctor. But remember this is just my speculation and opinions. With the government there’s no predicting what they’re going to do in any situation.
August 19, 2010 at 1:08 am #1555253tdogsParticipantfor Monday? (Well, as much as anyone can be for that kind of thing)…got the poochie sitter lined up and all? Been praying for ya for good health and good surgery…you take care! Sending you 3,000 hugs from 3,000 miles away!
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…
August 19, 2010 at 12:59 pm #15569BonbonParticipantThey will certainly help. And I prefer hugs over kisses so thanks for them too!
I’m going for groceries today and will cook up a few things that will be easy to nuke plus some snacky-type things so I can just eat something whenever I want. I won’t be too concerned with nutrition until I find I can eat again (not like last time where it was about three weeks before I could get food or water down which caused me to get dehydrated and have to go back in for another nine days. Although I do have some Ensure which contains everything I HAVE to have if I start getting weak. He is going to put a port straight into my stomach so I can at least inject water if I need to (so I have to stock up on sterile water too) and won’t have to back for an IV. Why can I drink dirty ol’ tap water but it has to be sterile to inject it? Hmmmm…
My neighbor’s 9-year old will watch the kiddies. Since she can’t have one of her own, she LOVES taking care of mine. They’ll be in good hands and will probably get a whole bag of cookies while I’m gone.
I have arranged for a ride there and someone to bring me home so that’s about all I’ll need. (It’s a real bummer not having any family around when it comes to stuff like this.) I’m as mentally prepared as I can be. I keep telling myself, I’ve been through it twice before and it was an emergency situation then so this should go much better.
Anyway, I’ve still got a few days to bug everybody, so…
Thanks again for your concern.
