Since my move and I previously had cable, I need to make a decision on which satellite service to go with. It should be easy as I already have a Direct TV dish on the grounds from the former owner. But I’ve heard from several that DTV goes out (at least around here) often. Funny because I heard that about Dish from my former place.
Anyone with experience would love some insight.September 8, 2013 at 10:57 pm #41046DeeLanParticipantand have Direct TV. It goes out at least 3-4 times a week if not every day. It’s very common when we record something to find out later that we didn’t get all of it or we’re watching something and the picture gets pixelated off and on until it goes out. This is when it’s overcast, raining or clear. Also when we signed up we were asked if we wanted the insurance or whatever it is for $5 a month. We said no but they tried to talk us into it by saying that if anything stopped working we had to pay for the replacement and a remote was over $100.
With that said we had Dish a couple of years ago and had a problem with them not getting NBC in our area. We had to pay an extra $2 a month or $24 to America Direct to get NBC. They’ve since gotten an affiliate here so that’s no problem but when we switched to Direct we had to send back our equipment at a cost to us. Seems they’ll deliver and install but won’t pick up used equipment. They did send us boxes with pre-paid shipping labels but added the shipping costs on to our final bill. The good news with Dish was it hardly ever went out.

Any dish will be affected by the weather and that’s the only time we have any problems with our feed. Usually it goes out only when the storm gets very intense. I’m very happy with Direct TV.
September 9, 2013 at 6:41 am #41048BonbonParticipantI am satisfied with it. I switched from cable because they kept raising the rates but after my initial 6 months introductory price, it’s now almost as much as the cable. But, as for service, they are fine. I get all the network and cable stations. Yes, it does go out when we have a bad storm but it’s never been for long, usually just a couple of minutes. But you can watch anything you have recorded while it is out. It sometimes pixilates momentarily but I had that with cable too.
I had once signed up for DTV and when they came out to install it they told me I’d have to pay an additional $50 per TV set to run the wires in the attic and down through the walls. They were going to drill right through the wall to run the wiring. I told them to get lost. Dish told me they’d heard many people complain of that.
As for service, I’d say it’s probably six of one and half a dozen of the other.
September 9, 2013 at 12:59 pm #41049goodolddaysParticipantI live in western PA and have had dish network for 10 years. Once in a while it will go out if the weather is bad, but not for long. The thing I like about dish is their customer service. They are always very helpful and friendly anytime I call for a replacement remote or a question. I have heard from friends that they regret getting direct tv.
September 10, 2013 at 12:25 pm #41052caseyParticipantfrom a few w/ Direct TV is they find the billing confusing and annoying. They say also Dish is a bit cheaper. I don’t know about Direct, but you don’t have to get a contract w/Dish, though they do sock you with a $99 fee if you don’t.
September 10, 2013 at 9:43 pm #41056caseyParticipantso many people are sick of the charges of satellite companies and switching to various creative avenues like high power antenna and/or Hulu, Roku, etc. My brother gets Netflix and internet streaming. Anyone have similar experience?

Bummer.
