So I guess I’ll add one.  I’ll milk this one for all I can get.

Some of you may remember that last August I had to go in for emergency surgery for a perforated stomach (the second one), sepsis and abdominal infection.  Well, it’s happening again.  The ulcers are back in the same place (where the small intestine is attached to the stomach) so now I’m going to have to go for surgery…AGAIN…to have that junction moved to a different area.  Dr. feels I have a poor blood supply in that area which is why (in spite of all the anti-acid meds I take) even though they heal, they come right back again.

So, next Tuesday, I see him to discuss exactly how he’s going to fix me (and I thought only dogs got fixed! ) and do my pre-surgery stuff.  I’m not looking forward to this but I don’t want to have another perforation either.  Believe me, that was no fun and EXTREMELY painful.

    Stay tuned…

I’m praying for the surgeon that he can fix the problem and do it uneventfully and for a speedy recovery for you.

about your PUD medical problems – I am so very sorry to hear about your illness – did you get that peptic ulcer from H. pylori or what?  Did they find out about the new ulcer from an X-ray or through the symptoms?

I take it you don’t take any  NSAIDS as that just exacerbates the issue, (I know because I’m having issues with the NSAIDS at my age now, but your damned if you do and damned if you don’t).

I don’t wanna scare you but this stuff is very serious especially at your age…please take care and my prayers are with you!

Docs seems to think the original ulcers came from NSAIDS I was taking for many years for my back pain.  The first perforation was in 2007, so, off the nsaids, aspirin, (I’m allergic to ibuprofen), and onto all the acid inhibitors (Prilosec 2xday), antacids (Tums) and neutralizers (Carafate 4xday).  Ulcer healed but came back even worse with another perforation last August, just two years later.  The concensus of all the docs is that I don’t have a very good blood supply in that area due to the first perforation, the sepsis, and the resection, then made worse with the second round.

So they agree the resolution is to remove the small intestine and relocate it to a more viable part of the stomach.  The final diagnosis was made by a CT scan done last Monday and an endoscopy on Tuesday.  I just may as well move into that hospital.  I’m going to The Cleveland Clinic so I know I’ll get excellent care.

The ironic thing is, I’m probably the calmest, most stress-free person you’ll meet, yet what do I do?  Get ulcers.  Actually, I don’t know if this has anything to do with it but my father suffered with ulcers his whole adult life.

And thank you to all you nice girls for your prayers and good wishes.  It worked last time, I’m sure it’ll work again.

in the face of this upcoming surgery. It sounds like you haven’t had an easy time of it. I will remember you in my prayers and for this issue to be resolved and restore you to good health. There is no better feeling than returning to good health after a long illness. It is SO true- when you have your health you have everything.

It seems that the good doctor decided to take a couple of weeks off to go to South America.  He says he doesn’t want to do the surgery and then go off and leave me (I liked that).  So it won’t be done until the end of August or beginning of Sept.  In the meanwhile, I’m getting all my pre-op stuff done.  I can’t believe, just because I turned 70, I need all these tests.  I’ve already had the CT scan and endoscopy done.  Now I need an upper and lower GI series, blood work, chest x-ray, EKG, family tree…  No, no, just kidding about the last one.

I’m kind of disappointed that I can’t go ahead and get it over with but this’ll give me more time to make arrangements for stuff like dog care, getting to and from hosp. (I hate not having any family nearby) and stuff like that.

One surprise I got was that he told me I’d mose likely would lose 20 – 30 lbs. because my stomach will be made smaller.  I’m not exactly skinny (BME is in normal range) but I don’t think I can afford to lose that much weight either.  That big a loss will require a whole new wardrobe.  Anyone want to lend me some weight to lose?  (Don’t all jump at once.)

UPS should be there tomorrow with some of my excess for you and if you need more just let me know.

On a serious note.  Sounds like what they’re doing is a gastric bypass.  My husband had that in 2005 and they told him he’d loose 1/2 his excess weight from the surgery alone.  The weight does come off fast at first but he does have to be careful with what he eats.  He can’t eat too much at one sitting but if he spaces it out into many small meals he can eat almost as much in a day as he use to he just doesn’t want to anymore.   He has to be careful with sugar as too much of it causes a "dumping syndrome" which is where his glucose level rises fast then nose dives and he gets sick.  He says there’s a fine line between satisfied and STUFFED so he has to watch for that.  Also he can’t eat Sonic food anymore.  It has terrible gastric effects on him.  Must be in the way they prepare the food.

His sister had the same surgery about 7 years before he did and she has no problem with Sonic but does have a problem with dairy.

A friend of ours had gastric bypass for problems other than weight loss and she has problems with different foods so I guess it depends on the person and how their system handles certain things.

They all said they’d do it again as I guess anything is worth the not having the problems they had before the surgery so I’m sure you’ll be feeling better and relieved that the recurrent ulcers will be behind you.

I will have a portion of my stomach removed rather than making a pouch of just a small part of it.  Also, in GB, they take out a good chunk of the small intestine.  I won’t have that done either.

you too Bonbon…but it will happen when it’s suppose to happen and you will be better off for it.  Plus, I entirely understand about having to have a plan for the poochies and the to and from the hospital part (same here)…if I was 3,000 miles closer sweetie, you’d be set for all of it the poochies, driving, including your meals and house dusted during your recovery time.  Plus, I think that I have 20 lbs that I could give ya too …but since I can’t just wanted to wish you all the best and my prayers for ya.
