Lots of news to report today.  Went out to get the paper and…SHOCK!  A cold snap.  It must be only 75°.  Fall has finally arrived.  Well, it’s better than the Nicole fall-out we were expecting although we DID get about 4" of rain from her.  But I’ll take that any day over the wind.

Now the bad news.  I fell off the ladder yesterday.  I’ve been waiting for years for this to happen.  It’s always worried me because of living alone but I never stopped climbing up and doing stuff that I probably shouldn’t be doing at 70+.

Although I didn’t kill myself (obviously!), I couldn’t move for a while and wondered how I was going to get any help (I was in the garage and our street isn’t very widely travelled).  So I just laid there for a while and my back would not let me move at all.  The dog was right there in my face though so I know she was trying to help.  After about 10 minues (that felt like 2 hours) I ventured standing up and successfully got in the house.  I laid down on the couch for a while and eventually could get up and move around.  I popped my strongest pain pill and just laid there most of the day.

The damage:  wrenched my back, sprained my wrist (it’s the size of a grapefruit), banged my knee (also swollen), elbow and pulled muscles in both of my forearms (I can’t figure out how I did that one).  But, I navigated fairly well yesterday…BUT…when I got up this a.m., O-M-G.  I think I have a little spot on the back of my heel that doesn’t hurt.

From having back troubles my whole life, I know there’s nothing I can do but Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate (RICE) so there’s no use going to the doctor.  I popped another pain pill and will try to get through one day at a time.  Actually, all I’m doing is trying to elicit some sympathy from everyone so if I can get that, I’ll probably get better faster.

Be careful.  Something could be fractured and you don’t know it.  I cracked a bone in my knee and didn’t know it for months, just complained of pain and stiffness after a fall.  Fractured my foot TWICE .  The first time when a patient cart rolled over my foot in the ER with a patient on it.  I worked for 3 days before seeing a doctor and the last time was a few months ago when I tripped over the vacuum cleaner cord.  Took them a week to diagnose (foot fractures don’t always show up until swelling goes down or the bone starts to heal) but I had 4 breaks in 3 bones.   Also with a sore spot on your head you must have whacked that pretty hard so be on the lookout for signs of a concussion.

I’m sending you a mega bunch of sympathy and hoping that it helps.  I am so sorry that you had such a fall and are feeling so bad.  Take good care of yourself and don’t hesitate to see a doctor if you develop any worse symptoms.   Hope you feel better real soon.

That’s one spot I missed.  Of course that’s probably the one spot I couldn’t get hurt because, according to my ex, my head is so hard.

it is always, always a sign that something is definitely wrong.  I wish you a speedy recovery.  RICE may be the way to go for now, but if your pain should linger without lessening, please, please see your orthopedist.  And stay off those ladders, girl … our ‘wonderwoman’ days are over … at least mine are.  Get well soon !!!

surgery!  I’m not going to lecture you…no, I’m notwell, do you know how many people our age, (past 50) fall off ladders and break hips – (that is the one thing one hears about all the time), and have to go to a hospital where they develop pneumonia and

    well, you know the rest.

Have you seen that commerical, "Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up?"

Have you hear the stories of the doggies who start out licking the faces of their fallen people and then two weeks later?  (I know it’s yuckkkie).

I AM not lecturing!  Hire a 25 year old hunk to climb the damn ladder!  That way you don’t get hurt, except for maybe a crick in your neck from looking up or eye strain!  I am NOT lecturing!  Take care of yourself woman!!!!!

laid there after hearing my ankle crunch as I hit the ground.  I did the same as you with the RICE procedure.  I’m 60+ and know that we don’t heal as easily as we used to, so I’m praying for you!

he prescribed some muscle relaxers and physical therapy for me.  When I get up in the morning I literally can’t move for a minute or so.  I think I messed up a bunch of muscles.  The only problem is they make me fall asleep.

Heck, I used to be able to fall out of trees and ladders all the time when I was younger and never get hurt.  Why do we have to wear out like this when we get older.  Growing old is certainly not for sissies!

And another question…why IS it no one ever tells us, this is what old age is going to be like?

Now The Alphabet  for old folks:

A’s for arthritis; the bad back,

    C’s

    the chest pains, perhaps car-di-ac?

    D

is for dental decay and decline,

    E

is for eyesight, can’t read that top line!

    F

is for fissures and fluid retention,

    G

is for gas which I’d rather not mention.

    H

    high blood pressure–I’d rather it low;

    I

for incisions with scars you can show.

    J

is for joints, out of socket, won’t mend,

    K

is for knees that crack when they bend.

    L

‘s for libido, what happened to sex?

    M

is for memory, I forget what comes next.

    N

    is neuralgia, in nerves way down low;

    O

is for osteo, bones that don’t grow!

    P

for prescriptions, I have quite a few,

just give me a pill and I’ll be good as new!

    Q

is for queasy, is it fatal or flu?

    R

is for reflux, one meal turns to two.

    S

is for sleepless nights, counting my fears,

    T

is for Tinnitus; bells in my ears!

    U

    is for urinary; troubles with flow;

    V

for vertigo, that’s ‘dizzy,’ you know.

    W

for worry, now what’s going ’round?

    X

is for X ray, and what might be found.

    Y

for another year I’m left here behind,

    Z

is for zest I still have– in my mind!

    B’s
