I’m having surgery on August 1st and starting to get nervous. The doc said they’d get me up the next day and I’d be using a walker/crutches for 6 weeks then a cane. Even though I’ve had knee surgery in the past for a torn cartilage and several abdominal surgeries this seems more extensive and the idea of getting up walking the next day sounds painful. Then thinking of going home in 2-3 days and getting in and out of the shower. We have a tub/shower combo and the idea of full weight on that leg or swinging it up over the side of the tub is overwhelming.
How was the recovery period? Is the pain manageable?

Good luck to you, it won’t be any worse than your last knee surgery.

She was up and walking the next day (in the hospital and the day after that she was released to come home with me where “I took care of her”- she was doing so much on her own I didn’t really take care of her – because she couldn’t drive for a month. After two weeks, she was up and mobile to where I drove her two hours home and she was fine – even working at her job a couple of hours a day. Two weeks later, she picked up her car and was driving around. My point is – that was five years ago – if she did that well back then at her age, think of the improvements that medical science has done by leaps and bounds on this surgery. As for the baths, maybe just sponge baths for two to three weeks and always make sure hubby assists you when you do get in. And make sure to get your PT in – that is critical to keep the joints/ligaments/muscles, etc., moving and to heal faster – ALL the very best to you for a very speedy recovery.

We’re going to measure the wall side of the tub to see if a shower bench would fit, that would allow me to sit outside the tub and slide over to where I’m sitting for a shower. Don could give me the hand held or just get everything ready for me and help me get down. We already have a grab bar on the wall outside the shower that I hold onto when getting in and out of the shower so that’s a big help. In the master bath, which is just a toilet and sink Don’s sister got us a taller toilet a couple of years ago and Don installed that so I’ll have no problem with sitting on the stool in there.
The nurse said I should expect to spend 3 nights in the hospital and PT will come in twice a day while I’m there then a therapist will come to the house for a bit. She also said that patients who have had a previous hysterectomy said that the knee replacement hurt less than the hysterectomy so that’s reassuring.

HE said he was afraid if he had one done he wouldn’t want to go back for the other. It took some time because it was so difficult to walk for a while but he’s 110% (in his words) better.
