For all you folks in her path, please take care and stay safe. Don’t underestimate the power of a Cat. 3, it can be very wicked. And if they tell you to evacuate, get outta Dodge as fast as you can. And please, make arrangements for your pets, don’t leave them behind.
The rest of us will be thinking of you and offering up our prayers for your safety and minimal damage.
August 26, 2011 at 1:18 pm #26129kprstrsParticipantAMEN!!!!! I have loved ones in harm’s way. They won’t risk it, though!
August 26, 2011 at 5:42 pm #26134PattiParticipantWe in the mid-Atlantic are going to get slammed. We got out of Ocean City yesterday, where I spent a wonderful vacation with my kids and grandkids, only to be told we had to leave a day early because of Irene, which is expected to hit directly over the resort town. It started to get a little crazy looking last night, so we decided to leave a day early to batten down our own hatches here at home. Looks like it’s definitely on its way. The last report has moved it up 12 hours now, so tomorrow and Sunday is going to be treacherous. We’re weather proofing the house as much as we possibly can, and yes, please keep your fingers and toes crossed for us, and keep us in your prayers.
As for the earthquake, I was on the beach and thought someone was shaking my beachchair from behind. Honestly, that’s what it felt like. My son looked over and asked "did you feel that" and then our cell phones immediately started going off with calls from home telling us about a 5.9 earthquake. I have never felt one here in Maryland in all my life, although I’ve read we’ve had a few tremors. I sure felt this one, though.
Geeze, imagine, a 5.9 earthquake followed by what is being foretold to be a category 2 hurricane (worst in 50 years here in the mid-Atlantic) both in the same week. So, yes, I would say this is more than a little scary, so, again, my friends, please, keep us in your prayers.
August 26, 2011 at 7:59 pm #26140NoraParticipantPrayers to all of you on the east coast. My husband lives in Fayetteville and he said it’s just starting to get dark there and starting to rain. They are getting the western edge. My mother and brother in law both live in Boston so they’ll get hit too. And I have friends in willmington, nc too. She actually live on Holden beach but she went to her daughters further inland. So my prayers for all of you!!!
August 26, 2011 at 10:33 pm #26145SWParticipantmore than hurricane. Still wet/windy but not as bad as it could be- hopefully! The air went from very hot and humid to much cooler now. The ocean was very cold and rather calm this morning when I walked the beach.
August 27, 2011 at 12:20 am #26148NoraParticipantOk thanks for the update SW!!!!
August 27, 2011 at 10:40 am #26158BonbonParticipantisn’t usually too bad, Wilma was a 2 when it passed over here and it did a tremendous amount of damage that took several years to clean up. There were numurous tornadoes within the storm that took off roofs and totally devestated the trees. The streets were completely impassable until the city came around with front loaders and just pushed all the debris out of the way. Our homeowner’s association had $4.2 MILLION in damage.
So, after you get your house prepared, if you can do some tree trimming, that’ll be a big help because it’s the flying stuff that does so much damage.
And when it’s all over, if you’re without power, do what my neighborhood did. We brought our grills out in the street, emptied the freezers and refrigerators and had a HUGE block party. It was great to get to know the neighbors we never talked to before. And, BOY, did we eat!!! Everybody said, "It’s just like camping.!"
I know it’s going to be scary but if you follow all the hurricane advice, you’ll be okay. I’ll be thinking of all of you any pray for your safety.
August 27, 2011 at 1:03 pm #26159SWParticipantnow it could be cat 1 but mainly wind on our side. The sky has darkened a lot since this morning when there was blue sky and some sun. Keep thinking of us!
August 27, 2011 at 3:25 pm #26163DebbiParticipantIt is really raining here. Started as a downpour and hasn’t let up at all. So far, no winds, but I know they are coming.
August 27, 2011 at 3:25 pm #26164Carol JParticipantIt’s just one of the outer bands. We are expecting a long power outage and hoping it doesn’t materialize. We live in the middle of the Island so no Tidal Flooding here but our neighbors to the North and especially to the South are being evacuated. It’s really scary when you here that NYC is shutting down all mass transit.
August 27, 2011 at 9:33 pm #26168SWParticipantit’s still way down south of here. I’ve had enough already and the wind hasn’t started yet either!
September 1, 2011 at 6:54 pm #26243Carol JParticipantWe just had our power restored last night after 3 1/2 days; thank you Irene. Thank goodness we have a generator for our fridge & extra freezer. I read 3 books and enjoyed being unplugged for awhile but it was getting old. Cooked on the BBQ. We were lucky to have no damage to our house but there are still massive power outages that may last til next week. Trees were uprooted all over and limbs are down on every street. All our East Coast kids fared very well; only one had a minor power interruption.Really missed checking in here on this board. -
