how about just opinions regarding the show itself. I posted incorrectly in the Annex Board and was advised to post here. I’m really disappointed in the caliber of the talent this year. I watched up to last week to see who the first four would be who got voted off, but I’m not even the least bit interested in watching the the rest of the season. Does anyone else feel that way? It seems that they all sound so similar. There are a couple of voices that follow a a little different style, but on the whole, I’m just not impressed.
As for Ellen, I think she’s doing a pretty good job. She seems to stutter a lot with her responses and repeats herself a lot. I’m just glad that the grade school atmosphere between Paula and Simon is gone!
March 1, 2010 at 2:23 pm #10938PattiParticipantI have to admit, I have been watching the Olympics and have not had the chance to really get into AI yet. Now, it’s back to normal, so I will be paying very close attention. So far nobody has given me that "WOW" factor, but it’s early and the kids are still in the very nervous stage. Time for them to get over it now, though, so we’ll see what happens tomorrow night. I can’t really comment on the 4 who were eliminated, because I really haven’t been paying that close attention. I can say, however, that I really like Ellen. She’s honest and seems to genuinely care about how she presents her critique so as not to damage these kids, as Simon often does, although I still think he is spot-on most of the time. So, I’m back, full time, anxious to watch, listen, build up, or tear down; however, from what I can determine, the raw talent is not there this season and it could certainly hurt the show in the long run.
March 1, 2010 at 3:03 pm #10939BonbonParticipantthis is only an opinion in general (which I’m always willing to give!).
It seems like you never know when a successful show is going to hit the bottom and drop out of favor. And it can happen because of so many things. I’m guessing with Paula leaving and the news that Simon is also going to depart may have a lot to do with people losing interest. However, that should have no effect on the talent itself.
There is certainly a lot of talent out there so it always surprises me that the first batch aren’t all extremely talented and ready to sign a recording contract. I suspect that they deliberately pick singers who have more potential for improvement over the course of the show than those who have what it takes right now.
I’m always fearful that my favorite shows of that genre (DWTS and Survivor) are going to go the way of so many other popular shows when I’m not ready for it to go. But then, I’ve deserted some very popular ones when they were still in their prime (ER, Nip/Tuck, Lost, Damages).
I hope for the sake of the fans, you get another good season this year, but I’m afraid after Simon leaves, that’s going to be the bullet that puts it in it’s grave.
March 1, 2010 at 10:27 pm #10952caseyParticipantBut then I thought the same thing early on last year, except for Adam Lambert who clearly had stage presence.
The problem with these contestants is they tend to pick the songs they love, instead of songs that suit their voices. I do believe nerves will fall away and talents will begin to come to the fore.
But AI will have to prove to me that this year’s crop is the “best yet.”March 3, 2010 at 10:31 pm #11032PattiParticipantthey switched from the girls to the guys, because one of the girls had to go to the hospital and her doctor would not allow her to appear last night, so the guys took the stage……..and, with the exception of big Mike (1st guy to sing "It’s a Man’s World"); and Alex Lambert, who has a very unique voice, but he’s much too shy and has no stage presence, I can’t see any of these guys even making it to the top 3 or 4 let alone winning it. The judges are still contradicting themselves from one competitor to the next, telling one they are changing a song too much, that they don’t have to change the melody so dramatically in a great song; and then telling the next competitor that they are "not making a familiar song their own." I half expect one of these kids to tell them to make up their damn minds, because they’re damned if they do; damned if they don’t.
March 3, 2010 at 11:07 pm #1103453tdogsParticipanthead in your description of the show, talent and judgement of the judges this year! This year may be the show’s swan song.
March 4, 2010 at 5:38 pm #11068PattiParticipantthe girls were worse than the guys. Honestly, if this is talent, then the show has definitely gone to the dogs, and the dogs are winning. So far, the best voices I’ve heard are the back-up singers.
March 4, 2010 at 9:58 pm #1108153tdogsParticipantand usually it’s the first shows from all the cities, and then the cut’s to get the last 24 ~ but in the promo’s and such Seacrest said that out of 12,000 from one city, 15,000 applicants from another city, (and I think the judges go to about seven cities total) ~ I find it rediculous that the people that they have on this year even made the first cut compared to people from other years that had true talent. And Simon is not Simon this year – he’s turned into a wuss for his judging. Ellen, to me, just parrots what everyone else says.
March 5, 2010 at 10:49 pm #11111caseyParticipantI find it ludricrous that the judges hailed this year’s crop as the best ever. Say what?? Compared to last year’s stellar group, I have to wonder what the judges were listening to. There are a few possibilities, but overall, who stands out as AI material? As able to sell millions of records and capture our imagination?
And as the judges are saying that the contestants just aren’t ready yet, or don’t know what kind of style they are etc, I’m thinking, “but YOU picked them!”
After the early rounds of my liking Ellen, I agree she’s saying nothing unique, stating the obvious. She should use her comedic talent more and let loose.
And Kara criticizing the performances but always adding, “but I still like you” is getting old.
Simon appears to be showing his “lame duck” weariness of the show and perhaps has lost his bite due to his new engagement.
Or maybe the judges are simply bored with these “hopefuls” that, at least at this point, do not measure up. I have to think America will be tuning out more and more.March 6, 2010 at 2:35 am #11120NoraParticipanti have to agree with everyone, it’s still early and I have yet to be wowed by any of them yet. They are all still pretty nervous, and just holding out til I find my favorite like i do every year. Ellen disappoints me though, I thought she would be funnier than she has been, she has some good ones sometimes but says the samethings as all the other judges do. Overall I’ve been disappointed this year.
March 6, 2010 at 12:14 pm #11123BonbonParticipantof this show? If so, you’d think he’d see how it’s dying a slow death from the comments people are making. I don’t believe I’ve read hardly anything positive for this season so far. It’s a shame that a show that was so overwhelmingly popular should be subjected to what’s happening. Maybe he thinks it’s more important to concentrate on his new show, the one he’s now doing in England and they’re bringing to the US. Can’t think of the name right now.
I think if I were in charge I’d sooner just shut it down for a few years and try to come back again stronger sometime in the future. But, that’s probably why I’m sitting here making comments and they are sitting in their offices raking in millions of dollars. Hmmmm, I wonder if they’d like to change places with me.
March 10, 2010 at 4:57 am #1117153tdogsParticipantchannels Joplin, Etheridge, and Aretha all in one! She rocked it tonight.
March 10, 2010 at 1:21 pm #11177luckeyParticipantshe’s been performing to raves from the public for some time now. I’m hoping she can bring it when they have those nights when they have to do a specific genre of music. I really like her voice.
March 10, 2010 at 1:56 pm #11180caseyParticipantand has to be the front runner. There WERE improvements but a few were downright dreadful, so much that you wonder how they got to this point.
March 10, 2010 at 4:37 pm #11187PattiParticipantwith both the girls AND the guys. She is the ONLY one who impresses me. The rest of them sound like Woodstock rejects.
