and I can’t complain about wasted food because I don’t toss away anything. I’m a big Dollar Store and Aldi’s shopper. I get soups for 50 cents/can and lottsa good stuff for a buck or under. I have leftovers and don’t mind them.
November 3, 2010 at 2:28 pm #17646BonbonParticipantSince I have plenty or room to store stuff, I buy a lot at Costco. Things like TP, paper towels, laundry soap and softener, dog food, vitamins, cleaning products and anything that won’t go bad. The anal person that I am, I made a spread sheet and entered the prices of all these products vs. what I have to pay at Publix (like Safeway out west). I find that I save an enormous amount by shopping there.
But…I have a WalMart near me and a Publix right across the street from it and while I find that WM usually has lower prices, they often don’t carry some products I use (specifically my favorite, blueberry jam) AND everything comes in large sizes, which again goes back to the original gripe of this post. I just can’t use that much, so I end up going to Publix and paying more.
November 3, 2010 at 2:45 pm #17654PattiParticipantas a matter of fact, I think many foods taste better the next day, and most freeze very well. I usually make leftovers from dinner the next day’s lunch, especially pasta dishes, stews and soups, which always taste better to me the day after they’re made.
November 3, 2010 at 5:59 pm #17664BonbonParticipantI don’t mind left-overs at all either. It was things you can’t save/use/freeze/combine and have to throw away I was talking about, i.e. lettuce, bread (don’t like defrosted bread), milk (I can’t use a whole quart of milk before it goes bad because I can’t drink it because of lactose intollerance but still use it to cook/bake with), and things like that. And things you have to buy in packages too large for just person.
November 3, 2010 at 6:52 pm #1766753tdogsParticipantit to cook with – and a quart or even a pint will go bad in my fridge before I use it or even open it sometimes, however, a friend of mine said she freezes (for about three months) an unopened quart of milk all the time for emergencies since her daughter is off to college and her hubby and her self don’t drink it. And she said it works fine for cooking. I put a quart in my freezer about three weeks ago when she told me to try it – but haven’t taken it out to use it yet. Has anyone else done this???
November 3, 2010 at 9:38 pm #17677SWParticipantas I have made "freezer jam" and it is fine. As to the milk, yes I’ve accidently frozen it but since I use it primarily to cook, I use "powdered" milk. It comes in packages that make a quart but you can use it by the tsp or cups. I don’t notice any difference with using the powdered stuff- making bread, chowder, etc. Plus, it lasts for years in the dry state.
November 3, 2010 at 11:25 pm #1767953tdogsParticipantrefridgerate – comes in small "juice box" style containers four to a pack – great for mashed potatos and other cooking. I don’t drink milk at all, but I hear the taste is OK to if cold (can’t imgine drinking room temp. milk). It’s a bit more expensive but it sits on the shelf for several months as it is done with ultra-pasteurization. I "found" it over here in the grocery stores because American’s don’t use it all that much but it was and still is being used in France and in Germany – first time I ever saw it was in the 60’s.
November 4, 2010 at 12:16 pm #17692BonbonParticipantahead of time so you can thaw it out. And you’d have to thaw the whole quart even if you only need like a cup.
I have found little milk packages that dont need to be refrigerated. They are like the juice boxes and are usually found on the shelf in the baking section or by the canned milk. They come four to a pack. I keep them in my cupboard and then if I don’t have to use the entire box (they’re probably about 8 oz.), I don’t have to throw so much away.
They come in whole milk, low-fat, and chocolate and it’s real milk, not reconstituted. How they can last on the shelf, I have no idea but I’ve kept them for a year. I originally bought them for my "hurricane kit" [formerly my "earthquake kit"]. Every April 1st (beginning of hurrican season), I replace everything in it and use what I take out and the milk was fine.
November 4, 2010 at 1:16 pm #17705PattiParticipanthave you tried the Tupperware Lettuce Keeper? That thing will literally keep lettuce fresh and crisp for weeks. No kidding, I have one and it’s a miracle to me seeing as how lettuce wilts so quickly.
November 4, 2010 at 5:09 pm #17719DeeLanParticipantI only drink milk when I have cereal and that’s not too often so I keep powdered milk for cooking. Except for when I make tapioca there’s no difference. If I feel it needs the fat from milk I’ll add a dab of butter also.
Don’t eat salads so can’t help there. It’s not that I don’t like salads, I do but I’m the only one that will eat lettuce and if I buy it I forget it’s there.
Everyone raves about Sams Club but I find it’s a waste of money for me as I can’t use the gallon size jar of peanut butter and even if I did I have no place to store it What I do like Sams for is paper products but those won’t spoil.
I don’t know where you guys shop but around me if something sells for 10/$10 and I only buy 2 of 3 I pay $1 a can. The other day our local Winn Dixie had yogurt 10/$5 and I paid 50 cents each for less than that. They just advertise it the way they do because a lot of people will think it’s a great deal and go for the full 10 since it sounds better than saying $1 or 50 cents each. If I remember my psychology classes it’s subliminal messaging.
November 4, 2010 at 9:34 pm #1772653tdogsParticipantbut not the 9/10th of a cent that is tacked on…subliminal ! If it’s three bloody dollars for a gallon of gas – then mark it that way! There is so much of that going on in not just marketing but the government with "fees" instead of them calling it what it is – a "flippin’" tax!!! So much for truth in advertising or the government…
November 4, 2010 at 9:36 pm #1772753tdogsParticipantwhatever brand) is smaller now? That’s one thing I don’t want to have to purchase that is smaller!
November 4, 2010 at 9:46 pm #17729mshults60ParticipantI agree with you about buying one or two if it is 10 for 10 dollars but that is not what they do here at Krogers and Randalls in Houston. They present a whole page of items that are included in the sale and if you purchase "any" of the ten then you will get the sale price on the items, other wise the price is the usual price. I just hate that because some of the items might be something I use a lot but all the other stuff would go to waste. Then they have this type of sale a number of times during the month which means you would have to buy another 10 items included in that week’s sale. Who needs that many groceries or has that much storage space. They just want to sell lots of inventory. Hate it, hate it, hate it.
November 5, 2010 at 4:00 am #17739DeeLanParticipantOne of our local stores has their 2 L bottle’s of Pepsi products for $1.25 each. Sometimes they’ll have a special of 4/$5 and people think they’re getting a great deal so they’ll stock up. It’s hilarious.
November 5, 2010 at 5:53 am #17740kprstrsParticipantYou can also freeze milk up to 4 months in a bowl with lid. I freeze it to cook with a cup at a time. Then it doesn’t take any time at all really to thaw! I even pop it in the microwave to thaw sometimes.
