I’m glad that the show didn’t just gloss over the whole incident and decided to show it again. I thought it was handled very well but I’m so fearful for Maks’ future on the show. Even if they bring him back again, I don’t know how he’ll ever get anything out of Len ever again. The only way I can see a happy ending to this is if all the pros get behind him and support his comments but I don’t see that happening. Such a shame.
Personally, I didn’t think Hope’s dance was that bad, certainly not bad enough to be in the bottom two. But I firmly believe that the judges comments can sway the voting and I think that’s what happened last night. If Hope goes before Nancy or Rob, I’m going to be really, really pissed.
I’ve have been rooting for David to go all the way but got to admit that JR is going to be a tough act to beat. Yes, his dancing is very good but I wonder how much of his support is because of his service and disfigurement. I’m sure there’s a lot of pity voting going on. But then, we all know these people are not judged on their dancing ability alone. Still, though, I think he’s the best one of the bunch, even better than Ricky and soooo enjoyable to watch.
October 26, 2011 at 12:42 pm #27993PattiParticipantwhen he suggested to Len that maybe it was time for him to quit. Those mics are on and the judges, hosts, and probably others, all heard him say that ‘this was his show’ and that ‘he started this show’, and I think that rubbed them worse than him telling Len he should quit. I adore Maks, but sometimes he just has to learn to bite his tongue and have his say in a more private atmosphere. That was clearly adding insult to injury when he said it was ‘his’ show, and quickly tried to cover it by saying how much everyone worked their butts off and, to that extent, I agree with him, but when you consider that his comments were made for all to hear, including the television audience, I’m afraid it put him in a much poorer light than if he had made them to Len in private. If the pros do agree with him, I’d bet my bottom dollar they wouldn’t do it in public, for the whole world to hear. Maks is wonderful, but so are ALL of the pros on DWTS. I just hope this all blows over, but he didn’t do himself any favors with his open remarks, that’s for sure. These judges are there for a specific purpose, and although they may sway some of the votes, I don’t think they hold that much power overall.
October 26, 2011 at 1:01 pm #27999caseyParticipantand mind you, I’m not a regular viewer, but this guy Maks is darn full of himself. He has an enormous ego and needs to filter it. He probably wishes he got a better partner than Hope and they have had their clashes.
I do believe however, that Len is part of the problem too and some of his personal comments were out of line. The judges have to remember, these “celebs” are not dancers and some clearly will never be. It’s all taken too seriously.October 26, 2011 at 1:06 pm #28000SWParticipantalso the issue of how the different celebs are judged. I saw Chaz on GMA this morning and he and his pro admitted that the insulting comments were very hurtful and not aimed at helping him improve as a dancer. If those comments were made in a school or workplace setting, I can guarantee you that there would be a bullying/harrassment charge being filed. It’s not funny and I can’t imagine it is helpful to the celeb trying their best. I doubt that any of them are going out there and saying, "I’m going to make a fool of myself tonight!" They try their best and some may never achive that pro level.
October 26, 2011 at 1:49 pm #28002luckeyParticipanthowever, he should have handled it a bit more professionally. I do believe that the heat of the moment on Monday night drove his comments. His appearance on GMA this morning helped to explain his feelings a bit more, but it doesn’t take away what was said and how it was said on Monday night. I believe that Bruno and Len do owe a general apology to all the dancers they have insulted with their unkind and unproductive comments. For me, it’s one thing to criticize the techniques; but, it is totally another to compare a dancer to an animal or object that truly sounds like a personal insult. Those judges are there strictly as experienced dancers to give their professional opinion on the mechanics of the dance that has been performed and the manner in which it was performed.
October 27, 2011 at 11:38 am #28036BonbonParticipantI think the penguin, Ewok, and basketball remarks were TOTALLY uncalled for but, if you think of it, look at some of the things Simon Cowell says to the contestants. But I suppose they are okay because they aren’t "celebrities" he’s saying them to.
I sometimes think too often PCness gets carried too far but when the remarks are as hurtful as Bruno’s were, he should be called on it.
I can’t help but think that maybe Maks’ remarks just might bring about some changes to the judging in the future. I would think the producers might tell the three that they need to stick closer to strictly judging the dancing and leave the personal remarks out of it. I hope so anyway. I’d really like to see honest judging without all the imbellishments, especially Bruno’s. I really get tired of all this theatrics and it has to be every single time. He was funny the first 200 times but it’s worn very thin. Maybe they should put some Super Glue on his chair!
October 27, 2011 at 1:17 pm #28048luckeyParticipanthe reminded the viewers that Len is the only one of the judges that has ballroom experience…Carrie Ann and Bruno do not. I’ve never read the background on how DWTS chose the three judges that they have. Knowing that Len has ballroom experience, I can understand him being selected. I’d love to know who else was in the running along with Carrie Ann and Bruno and how they became the final choice.
October 27, 2011 at 4:52 pm #28054BonbonParticipantwere professional ballroom dancers and teachers so they should probably be well qualified. But I think they were probably selected more on their personality than anything else. But, like I said before, I wish Bruno would start to tone it down a little. I’m really tired of his over-acting.
Because the show is produced by BBC, and Len is British, that probably had a lot to do with it. In fact, the show originally began in England and, like so many other shows (like America’s Got* Talent), we copied it here.
* – Shouldn’t that be ‘Has’? Same thing with ‘You’ve got mail!’ That really bothers me because if you’re going to use "got," I believe you have to preface it with "have." Sorry, my OCD taking over.
October 27, 2011 at 8:39 pm #28065trixiebeldenParticipantjust as an aside, I believe in both these instances, it does have "has/have" prefacing it- "America’s got" is the same as "America has got", and "you’ve got" is "you have got"…..
October 27, 2011 at 9:36 pm #28066DeeLanParticipantAgreed. Aren’t those called contractions when you take 2 words and combine them as in; isn’t = is not, can’t = can not, you’ve = you have, America’s = America has (or it could be posessive as in belonging to America).
No I wasn’t an English major but poor grammar is something that also gets on my nerve.
October 28, 2011 at 2:48 am #28074luckeyParticipantdidn’t have ballroom dancing experience if they actually did? I haven’t checked their background extensively; however, ET did a backstory on the judges one time and it never mentioned ballroom dancing only show dancing like in chorus line type productions with regard to Carrie Ann and Bruno.
October 28, 2011 at 12:01 pm #28077SWParticipantlevel and for the number of years that the pros have?
October 28, 2011 at 1:25 pm #28085luckeyParticipantLouie is correct. Neither Carrie Ann nor Bruno have any ballroom experience between them. Carrie Ann was a Fly Girl on "In Living Color" and has choreographed several TV shows. She actually started out as a singer. Bruno is more noted for his choreography in music videos and stage shows as performer and/or creator.
I agree that Bruno needs to tone it down. I had forgotten that there was a clash between him and Michael Bolton a few seasons ago, so this is not the first time that Bruno has crossed the line with his remarks.
