are seemingly definitely going to be a go. So, if it has to be, I’m hoping that Eric is the one to decide to leave and not that Nicole tempts him into leaving. Personally, I’d rather they put Nicole with Rafe, because I think they work well together, but from what I’ve seen and read, the next super coupling will be Nicole and Eric. Did Eric become a priest for the wrong reasons, because when he was a photo-journalist int he Congo, the older priest saved him and died in Eric’s place? Did he become a priest because of guilt, feeling God and the church saved him, so he felt compelled to give his life back to the church, or was he just so guilty because he could not save the girl or the older priest and, therefore, decided to devote his own life to God? It’s so obvious he still cares very much for Nicole, and now that she has admitted that she still loves him, did he hear her? Will it change his mind in remaining a priest. So far I love their story, but I’m sorry if Eric leaves his calling. He’s just so convincing as a priest …. a little boring; but, nevertheless, totally convincing.

February 22, 2013 at 3:37 pm #38044luckeyParticipantmovies and books! I read the book in 1979 when I was in the hospital after giving birth to our son and could not put it down! The movie was a favorite because of Richard Chamberlain…who I have loved since he played Dr. Kildare way, way, way back in the day! He was outstanding in the role of Fr. Ralph!
February 22, 2013 at 3:43 pm #38045PattiParticipantThis had The Thornbirds written all over it, which happens to be one of my favorite novels/movies of all time.
February 22, 2013 at 4:29 pm #38047BonbonParticipantI’m glad I didn’t know that then because he sure played that part so well. In retrospect, there were so many men who played heartthrobs that we found out later were gay, Montgomery Clift, Rock Hudson…
I hate to see Eric "fall" too. I’d rather just see them pining for each other but unable to act on it. I too think Nicole and Rafe would be a good pairing but then, Nicole is so good with everybody they put her with. I guess it wouldn’t matter much. I’m just afraid that if Eric leaves the priesthood it’s going to ruin his character. Where will they take him then. We know he and Nicole will never be left to be happy for long. So will he just become another Lucas, Brady, Daniel, Rafe, EJ, moving from woman to woman?
February 22, 2013 at 5:18 pm #38050MKParticipantUntil the Thorn Birds, I had never heard of Richard Chamberlain. I was 14 when it first came on TV and that’s when I fell in love with Father Ralph. None of my friends even knew who he was or even watched the Thorn Birds for that matter. I guess I was an unusual 14 year old.
A couple weeks ago, PBS aired a one-hour show titled "Miniseries" as part of their "Pioneers of Television" series. It featured "Roots", "Rich Man, Poor Man" and the "Thorn Birds." Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward were discussing the show. At one point, he was discussing the scene where he was naked, drying himself off with a towel, on Mary Carson’s porch. In the scene, Barbara Stanwyck was carassing Father Ralph’s chest and I guess she flubbed her line and she supposedly never ever flubbed any lines she was delivering. To that, Chamberlain said she said "It’s been a very long time since I’ve been next to a naked man." I would love to see that out take. So Richard was really naked in that scene. What I would have given to be the one carassing that naked body, well, maybe not as a fourteen year old. LOL!!
February 22, 2013 at 11:11 pm #38067caseyParticipantas Dr. Kildare. I also recall he made a record out of the theme song called “Three Stars Will Shine Tonight.” Anyone recall that one? He did a pretty credible job on it too.
Yeah, I loved the Thornbirds. But when it got to the later episodes with the melodrama of Ralph’s son it for me became rather absurd.
As for Eric leaving the priesthood this is Days so I’m betting it will happen. I hate to see it, but I also bet Days will explain it as Eric becoming ordained for the wrong reasons.
But I so love him as Father Eric. I mean it’s a rare chance when we see a “human” man of the cloth. Usually these characters are so stereotypically cardboard pious.February 23, 2013 at 1:02 am #38069luckeyParticipantwas guy until a number of years after "Thorn Birds". I’ve never seen a picture of his partner, but I read where he lives in Hawaii these days. He’s a very classy man!
February 23, 2013 at 1:04 am #38070luckeyParticipantyears! I remember it well and just loved it! You’re right he did do a very credible job of singing.
