Anyone watch? Usually I’ll tune in to see the parade of athletes and/or a bit of the extravagana but these things usually turn into a hot mess. This however, was one of the best. Not only could I follow the SL but the execution and spectacle were striking. The combo of Russian culture and technology was impressive and it certainly showed the hours and money put it.

and I agree, it was beautifully done and extremely impressive. From what I understand, Putin went all out for these Olympics, so I can only imagine how he felt very near the beginning of the actual ceremonies when the 5th ring did not open and join the other four. Bet somebody’s head rolled for that one. Otherwise, I thought it was spectacular.

I’ve been interested in these Olympics this year mainly because I know so little about that part of the country. So far, I haven’t been disappointed. I never watch the entire opening ceremonies, but I couldn’t stop watching it last night–watched the whole 4 hours. Loved the colorful balloons, brightly lit costumes, and the whole "story" of Russia. The athlete’s outfits were much more interesing this year than in years past, too. Usually every country will wear boring blazers, but last night there were lots of different coats, scarves, gloves, and boots! During the next few weeks, I hope they show lots of the Olympic villiage and Sochi itself.

For one – for “esthetics” that were pleasing to the western cameras: They rounded up all the stray dogs in Sochi and shot or hung them. The waters bad. The hotels are bad. The travel is bad. And I haven’t even started on the human rights issues.

A Russian billionaire saved them. Here’s the story:

So, you see, there are some decent people in Russia.
