went there so turn around is fair play.
May 28, 2010 at 7:15 pm #1326053tdogsParticipantI am an avid fan of Mr. Beck – so I guess that counts me as a loon – however, I have learned more about American history in watching his show than I was ever taught in high school and in college (and history was my minor).
Yes, he’s a bit flamboyant and theatrical in his show; it is television after all. If he droned on like some of my professors did at a 2:00 p.m. class it would be a definate snooze fest and he wouldn’t have the enormous ratings that his show does have.
That being said, if you listen to his facts and figures, (and I don’t just take his word for it, as I said I studied history for four years and know how to look information up for myself and I voracioualy read books), he is correct on his points.
May 28, 2010 at 8:45 pm #13263BonbonParticipantYou put that much better than I could have. And regardless of my political views, and I’ll admit to being a staunch Republican, those kind of remarks just don’t belong on a show like Days. I could accept it on a sitcom or Leno or Letterman but like you say, it can easily alienate fans with differing views. I don’t know why TPTB don’t understand that.
That said, I think much of our country has gone way overboard with their political correctness these days. I’ll have to include myself because of my comments here. But I wish we could just consider the sources when things like these errupt. It seems like more and more. people (especially in politics and the entertainment business) have to walk on eggs with what they say. Why not just let people say what they want and everybody else consider the source. If you’re offended, well, that’s your problem.
I find the same thing in what’s going on now with Jesse James’ cheating on Sandra Bullock. Everybody is making him out to be one step removed from Satan (add Tiger Woods in this too). Although I certainly don’t condone what these guys did and think it’s dispicable what they’ve done to their wives, if every man who cheated on his wife were vilified as these guys were/are (and all others who’ve done the same thing…and we can name many of them), there wouldn’t be a whole lot of "good guys" left. And I don’t think everybody should be so quick to advocate divorce for them. How about working things out and keeping families together. If you truly love someone, you try to solve the issues, no matter how henious, and get on with your lives. You hear so many women say if their partner cheated on them, they’d be out the door in a second. Is that really the best solution?
Well, sorry for the rant but I just felt I had to tell somebody. Our country is going to hell in a handbasket and I think these kinds of things are helping speed it along. <stepping off soapbox now> Isn’t it great to have this venue to spout off on?
May 28, 2010 at 9:57 pm #13271drea4713ParticipantI don’t condone any cheating and I certainly don’t know how I would feel if my husband cheated on me, but I would like to believe I would make every effort to repair the relationship. By the way, usually cheating is a symptom of a bigger problem, not the problem itself. Most people wouldn’t admit or agree to that, but I wholeheartedly think that it is 99% of the time.
As for the rest of your post, I wish there wasn’t so much mud slinging in politics. Why can’t we listen to each other and agree to disagree w/o insinuating that someone else is an idiot simply because they don’t agree? What annoys me most is when people are misled or form their opinions about candidates or issues without having any facts. In that situation I might be inclined to think you’re a little moronic, but not from a difference of opinions. It’s certainly difficult for me to understand the other side in certain hot topics (I’ll leave them off here so we don’t get into any arguments!).
Anyway, I didn’t like the Glenn Beck statement, not because I am a strong supporter of his, but I do watch Fox News and I think that although some of them are slanted very much towards the right, they report much more fairly than the mainstream media, but especially MSNBC (NBC anything, really). I think the comment itself was an intended slam to Fox news as a whole. JMO
May 29, 2010 at 3:23 pm #13284granny34446Participantand make my own decision. Mainstream News shows are not like they used to be, just reporting facts. They select what to report or show and what not to. I just hate the thought of all the TV mud sligs ads that will be on from now till November.
May 29, 2010 at 10:31 pm #13295caseyParticipantas well as most of the major newspapers in this country. The Beck thing doesn’t bother me only because I heard it from a tv character and I know better, but yes, I believe Days should even up the score.
The James and Woods sex scandals are way over the top in media time given. I always shake my head when these guys are called “womanizers.” Well gee, what does that make these legions of women who are part of the tango? They are certainly not victims!!May 30, 2010 at 1:03 am #13296PattiParticipantand I have decided that all it was, like it or not, was a writer’s poor attempt to receive credit for a "line of the day" award, and not related to any political agenda. I guess everybody reads into it what they want to believe, depending on their own feelings toward the one being slammed, and that’s fine, but whether you or your source of information leans toward the left, right or middle, that line was not intended to make a political statement AT ALL. It was meant to be funny …. to some it was …. to others not so much. In any case it obviously failed miserably. So take heed writers, or you’ll be feeling the heat more often than not with that sort of attempt at humor. Frankly, I don’t give a damn who they slam. Once you’re in the public eye you put yourself out there for the public to critique with every word you utter, good, bad or indifferent. Personally, I take pride in the fact that my mind is made up by ME, and not overly influenced by any individual, whether they be a television personality, commentator, political analyst, television station or news network. The final choice is MINE.
May 30, 2010 at 8:10 pm #13300majencoParticipantWell I am staying out of political discussions. I like talking Days and have learned the hard way not to debate politics unless you are on a forum that is specifically about that. Too much real life drama. I would rather just stick to Daytime drama around here.
June 3, 2010 at 6:04 pm #13368powerpaw2ParticipantThis is a link to search results that you get when you go to the NBC Universal store website and search on Obama: http://nbcuniversalstore.resultspage.com/search?w=obama&v=nbcu
Please note that NBC’s parent company is GE which is run by Jeff Immelt. GE is positioned to make a boatload of money if Cap and Trade is passed.
BTW, I’m not a Beck fan as he is much too theatrical for me. When he’s not trying to be a performer, he does make some excellent points.
June 3, 2010 at 7:18 pm #13372dvalParticipantI found it funny and appropos in the moment. I took it as just a comment about a person in the news. Maybe I am just naive, but I don’t think that every time someone makes a comment it is meant to disrespect my beliefs or try to get me on their bandwagon. Whether you like Glenn Beck or not you have to admit that he is a media figure and does a lot to attract attention. He would probably be thrilled to find out that he had been mentioned on the soaps. And I like the idea of making the show seem more of this world, with a few comments here and there, as opposed to seeming like it is on its own planet, LOL.
June 3, 2010 at 8:44 pm #13377DeeLanParticipantI remember YEARS ago the must not have filmed as far in advance as they do now or it might even have been filmed the day it aired because every once in a while there’d be mention of something that just happened in the news. That really made it more like the real world.
