But it’s supposedly "cutting edge" and all the rage in TV shows. It’s supposed to make it more "suspenseful." Bull-oney! It’s just very annoying AFAIC. I’m going to give it one more try though. I gave up on Revenge and people told me that got better after the first episode so…
I’m just worried how I’m going to record all my shows for two weeks when I go to Africa. I’m probably going to run out of room. Guess I’ll have to pick and choose what I really don’t want to miss. Hmmm, wonder if my VCR still works.
February 13, 2012 at 5:05 pm #31008PattiParticipantreminds me of "The Blair Witch" project.
February 13, 2012 at 6:34 pm #31009MKParticipantI agree. Jerky camera work does not make the shows more suspenseful. For me, it creates the opposite effect. It’s usually a lot of confusion and chaos and I think it breaks up what could be a suspenseful scene so it comes out feeling choppy. Without the jerkiness, I feel the tension would be better built. I also feel a tad nauseous watching that camera style.
I almost gave up on Revenge too but I’m so glad I didn’t! It did get better so I really enjoy it.
February 13, 2012 at 6:38 pm #31010MKParticipantI didn’t find "The Blair Witch Project" scary at all. I thought it was ridiculous because I never felt the suspense. I just remember the sound of rustling leaves as everybody would be running around constantly saying things like "What was that?"
February 14, 2012 at 12:52 pm #31024BonbonParticipantThat was nothing but the produce of media hype. I was so terribly disappointed in the movie. There wasn’t even a mild scare in the entire thing.
February 14, 2012 at 1:06 pm #31025BonbonParticipantI can say I do like the drama part of it but the music doesn’t turn me on. (I just wish they wouldn’t lip-sync the songs, especially when they do the close-ups.) And so far, it’s kind of formulaic too. We knew this was going to cause problems in Karen’s relationship with Dev. And who didn’t see the blond ending up in bed with the director? My guess is she’ll get the part and then something will happen to her and Karen will take over and be the proverbial "Smash."* I’ll try one more episode.
I’ve never seen what people see in Angelica Houston. She leaves me cold but I’ve been impressed with Debra Messing’s performance.
* This happened in real life in San Jose, CA. The San Jose Civic Light Opera (not a good name as they presented musicals, not operas, but they ultimately changed it to American Musical Theater) was putting on Sondheim’s Phantom of the Opera (different than Webber’s but great show just the same). And the star fell and broke her leg during rehearsals just a couple of days before opening night. Well, the understudy, a local girl and virtually unknown, took over and was a hugh smash. Big write-ups in the papers, on the TV news, and everything. I don’t know where her career ultimately went but she did an absoluty amazing job in the part. She got standing ovations several times. I went to the third performance and they were still giving ovations. Life imitating art at its best.
February 14, 2012 at 3:19 pm #31032PattiParticipantI wasn’t referring to the movie, just the relation to the ‘jerky camera’ and how it was shot.
February 14, 2012 at 3:33 pm #31034PattiParticipantfrom the stars to the music, including the singing and the dancing, to the way it is portraying the true life story of Marilyn (who really did worry that she inherited her mother’s mental illness). There may be lip syncing, but I don’t mind. You really have to be looking for it to see it. That’s the fault of those behind the scenes who never learned how to match up the sound with the actual movement of the lips. Katharine McPhee could sing underwater and still sound good. I’m not so sure the blond has it yet. I just am amazed with the whole show so far and cannot wait until the awards come out for this season’s shows. Smash WILL be walking away with lots of them. As far as Angelica Houston is concerned, she’s another reason I love this show. She’s is a fantastic actress who can sell anything/anyone she portrays. She is talent personified. Deborah Messing is doing a great job with drama. I’m so used to her playing comedy that it was hard to visualize her in her role, but she is fantastic so far. All this talent, plus Steven Spielberg as one of the EP’s. It was born to be a winner, and I see Katharine McPhee’s career skyrocketing from it.
