I’ve seen a lot of people mention Soapnet lately, so I thought I’d pass along the news that I read. On March 23rd, Soapnet will become a 24-hour Disney Junior channel. I’m not sure if it’s happening that day in ALL markets, but from what I read, the switch will happen everywhere once all the contracts are finalized. I’m happy about this for my 18-month-old son, but sad that my Days "backup" will be no longer!
March 14, 2012 at 5:35 pm #31780bluebonnetParticipantwhen this was going to happen. I heard something about it a year or so ago and then nothing else. Thanks for the update letting us know the exact day it’s switching. I hate to see it happen, though. It does make for a good backup.
March 14, 2012 at 9:08 pm #31787BonbonParticipantGuess I’d better get that new DVR.
March 14, 2012 at 11:08 pm #31791mshults60ParticipantYou guys need to check out Hulu.com—-Put Days of Our Lives in the box and it will give you a choice of which episode you want to see. For me it is just wonderful because the captions are in bright yellow and so much easier to read than the cc on my regular TV. We have never had any kind of cable or dish stuff and probably won’t. I hate paying for something I can still get free even if it isn’t everything. Most things now come around on dvd sooner or later anyway. Today’s show won’t be available until tomorrow, that is one thing I would like to change. Would love to watch it tonight since I missed it today.
March 15, 2012 at 11:39 am #31795BonbonParticipanton TV as opposed to my computer. Much more comfortable on the couch with the big HD screen than sitting in an office chair at the puter (as posted before, I don’t have a laptop). I know there are several places you can see the episodes but still am sad at losing SoapNet.
March 15, 2012 at 11:58 am #31798SWParticipantthat much time in front of the TV. I know it hasn’t been confirmed but there have been suspicions that that much time for that age group can lead to some symptoms of autism. It alienates kids from actual human contact and makes them expect everything to happen in their surroundings at ‘TV clip speed’. Kids at that age should be developing real language, speaking and listening skills, vocabulary, etc. There are also many that will use that as an alternate babysitter which is also scary. I know many will disagree with my point of view.
March 15, 2012 at 12:52 pm #31799DeeLanParticipantI agree it’s not good for watch too much TV. Not sure about the autism link but I do know kids need to play and use their imagination in pretend play and develop their fine motor skills which toys can do. I also know studies have been done that kids watching TV too late in the evening or older kids playing video games too close to bedtime have a harder time falling asleep and are more sleep deprived. The brain needs time to "unwind" before going to sleep and when you take a kid from action packed or fast moving TV or video games straight to bed their brains are still going at warp speed. The same they’re now saying is true for kids who have computers and smart phones with texting and chatting capabilities.
March 15, 2012 at 1:00 pm #31802BonbonParticipantbut there are way too many parents these days that find it so much easier to plunk their kids in front of an electronic screen instead of doing what is really best for them.
But, it’s the same with food. How many parents let their kids eat what they want (fast food…sweets) as opposed to good nutritious food? Way too many in both categories.
March 15, 2012 at 1:38 pm #31804mommytutuParticipantI honestly don’t have time to sit at the computer watching an episode on the computer. I can watch at 5 in the morning while I get other things done in my house. This sucks!
March 15, 2012 at 3:02 pm #31807PattiParticipantjust like ABC’s The Chew and The Revolution…. Both of those shows are in the tank now, and fans of OLTL and AMC are ecstatic about that …. present company included. I read where The Revolution is actually paying people ($30.00 per show) just to sit in the audience. LOL!
March 15, 2012 at 4:23 pm #31812BonbonParticipantWhile they seem (to me anyway) totally worthless shows, I hate to see them fail because I own Disney stock. :o)
April 6, 2012 at 8:04 pm #32263IzzyBParticipantI understand with The Chew and The Revolution because the networks were hoping to get the same audience and they wanted to basically tell us soap watchers what is a better option and cheaper for them to produce. But Disney Jr is going after completely different audience. I haven’t watched Soapnet in ages because I have a DVR and just tape Days or watch it on the internet. I think this is more a sign of the times with technology. Most people don’t watch it on soapnet, so the ratings were not enough to sustain its existance. On the other hand Disney Jr part of Disney is very popular and I am glad to see it on 24 hours vs. a small portion of the day.
I agree, children are on the computer, playing video games, and watching TV too much. They also are not eating healthy. But at the same point, all of those tools can be used in the right manner by some parents. My child is 15 months old and does not "watch" TV, but it is great background noise and keeps her more interested in being in her playroom and playing with her toys longer. If she looks up once in 20 minutes and happens to learn something, that is even more of a plus. I use a mixture of TV and music (Pandora on the Tivo is awesome for this – great toddler learning songs) so that she wants to stay in her play area. Without those sounds she is at the gate and wanting out. Which is also not good for her because then she is being held too much and not playing and learning with her toys. And then you are going to say well play with her, well I do, but even with me playing with her she does it for 2 or 3 minutes and is at the gate without the TV or music on. Now would I allow her to sit and stare at the TV for hours on end, no. When she is older and wants to watch TV , I am going to limit it to a certain amount of time and the rest of the time it will be music only. I pretty much do that now. I have the TV on for at most an hour in the day and the rest of the time I have the music playing. But the TV gives it more variety for her and I noticed she enjoys certain things like the intro to the Dinosaur train and danced to that while watching the intro. Then she is off playing.
I also allow my daughter to play with my phone. I have piano apps and she loves to play with it. Babies are attracted to technology no matter what you do. I learned that the hard way. So by allowing her to "play" with it, she is less attracted to it, because it is now "old" to her. I am amazed at how she gravitates to remotes, phones, computers, etc. I guess even the babies know it is technology age
April 6, 2012 at 9:10 pm #32264SWParticipantfrom say 8 or 9pm to 5am. That way they can let the kids watch during the day when soapnet only had reruns and let the soaps have the later evening hours when pre-schoolers SHOULD be in bed getting the sleep that research indicates they need. I hate to think that ABC is encouraging parents to let their kids watch TV 24 hours a day. There’s room for both if the network would only wise up! But, I guess the network would rather cultivate a junior generation of fans who will be demanding the products that their advertisers put out.
April 6, 2012 at 10:24 pm #32266PattiParticipantWHUT (Ch. 19)
TOONS – Cartoon Network (Ch. 42)
DISNEY (Ch. 43)
NIK (Ch. 44)
SPRT (Ch. 128
NIK TOONS (Ch. 129)
HUB (Ch. 130)
NIC JR (Ch. 131)
NICK 2 (Ch. 132)
T-NCK (Ch. 133)
DIS-XP (Ch. 135)
SMILE (Ch. 282)
WETAK (Ch. 266)
These are ALL children’s networks, and many of them are pre-school and early learning networks that stay on most of, if not all day/night. Then the local stations (abc, cbs and nbc) show children’s programming throughout the weekends, during the morning/late afternoon before regular programming begins. How many children’s networks does a child need to watch? SoapNet was the one place a soap fan could go if they missed the show, were busy with other things or, in many instances, did not have a DVR box with their cable, which is an additional cost to the subscriber, as well as the fact that, as SW mentioned, that most children are not up during the evening hours and watch their programming during the day or after school. JMHO!
April 8, 2012 at 5:08 am #32292IzzyBParticipantI don’t get most of those, so not sure if they are local networks. But many of the other ones mentioned are not very good for young kids. Outside of Bugs Bunny there is no way I would let my child watch Cartoon network, that network is not for kids. Disney is great when it is Disney Jr, but the rest of the time it is for older kids, same with Nick. Right now I would depend on Disney channel during the Jr sections and PBS when it is kids programming. Outside of that there wasn’t any options for me anyways. I know others would let there kids watch the other stuff that is not very educational. But neither of those is all day long. So right now I tape stuff and keep it on for times when nothing age appropriate is on. But I keep having to delete the stuff because I don’t have room on my DVR. Of course my twins sleeping schedule is so different from any other children that could be why their programming is not normally on when I want it to be on. Because of my sons medical condition and our nurses schedules we ended up on a very odd schedule. My daughter sleeps until 11 AM most days. Hence I was excited about Disney Jr being added. Now I do agree that they could do soapnet from 10 PM to 5 AM, but I don’t think they think it is worth it since adults are not normally awake then either.
It is all about ratings and what people will watch. My guess is very few people watch Soapnet. I get that for those of you that did it sucks big time. I hope you find an alternative, how about old school VCR?
