I work with Peggy McKay’s cousin and he told me that there is an upcoming storyline in which Caroline begins to show signs of Alzheimer’s .

I think it was about.com, that there was a huge storyline coming up for Caroline, but it didn’t state what it was about.  That’s something they haven’t tackled yet, so I’m looking forward to it.  Just hope it’s done right, not only with Peggy’s role, but for her family members, as well as those who care for her.  There have been family members of mine with Alzheimer’s, and it can be devastating for family and loved ones to watch or care for their dear family member who suffers from this horribly debilitating disease.  I hope the writers do it justice by researching the disease thoroughly.

She was diagnosed during the last two years of her life.  I tried to take care of her (with little or no family support) 24/7 (against her own doctor’s advice) for six months – it’s the toughest thing to watch have happen to someone.  It is terrifying to see someone "fade" into someone that looks like the person you know – but they are not that person anymore.

I’m not sure of why the stat’s seem to show that this disease is becoming so much more prevalent here in our society today, I’ve read as much as possible – they just do not know.  They have ideas, fat in the diet, aluminum foil, chemicals, to me all those things cause a lot of disease and illness.  My mother was the only one in the family that I am aware of that developed the illness.

I applaud the show for tacking this issue – I just hope they don’t gloss over it as they have in the past with other health traumas however, I am sure that they will not do the issues justice – they won’t show the real "ugliness" of what actually happens to Caroline as the disease progresses, like she opens the door to strangers or goes off with them, or walks outside at 3:00 a.m. in her undies, or gives away items from her home and is secrertive and suspicious of family, or has "sundowners" (a symptom of Alzheimers where the person becomes agressive in the late afternoon and early evening even though two hours prior they were happy-go-lucky).

The show could surprise me if they do address the issue though, but given the shows history of people being shot and two weeks later ‘doing the macarana’ or "face transplants" or other serious medical issues – I don’t hold out hope for that – but it would be nice.

Yes, it seems there are many more cases of Alzheimers these days but isn’t that also true of autism, ADHD, and a few other things?  There are so many suppositions like you mentioned.  Also, the hormones getting into our food and the polution saturating our soil.  Who knows.  I sometimes wonder what we are doing to our world and am somehow glad I’m not going to be around to see it.  I feel badly for our children and grandchildren.  But…it seems no matter what we do, wars, pollution, global warming, whatever, we always adapt to it.

I haven’t had any Alzheimers in my family (thank God) but have seen it in other’s.  As my doctor told me, it isn’t the person that has it you should feel sorry for, it is the caretaker(s) and families…they are the ones who are suffering.  I just can’t imagine having to do that.  God bless you, Pammy, for tackling this difficult job with your mom.

I think they (TPTB) have done a credible job with Theo’s autism as they did with Will’s "coming out," so I hope they can do the same with Caroline’s problem.  If one of the writers has any first-hand experience, I’m sure that will help.  Let’s just hope so.

dealt with the disease – it showed a doctor’s wife with the illness as it progressed.  They (Grey’s) did a very good job of it, I hope that DOOL will attempt to try to go that far in showing what happens.  And sad for the character of Caroline, since Bo won’t be around to help his Ma deal with it.

I agree there are things in our environment and food that were at first thought to be safe and they’re now finding out are the cause of many illnesses and conditioins.  On the other hand I need to wonder, is Alzheimers more prevalent or are they diagnosing it earlier and making accurate diagnosis.  By accurate diagnosis I’m talking about years ago they diagnoses memory and personality problems as senile dementia or ignored them all together where today they know more about the stages of alzheimers so they’re able to make a more accurate diagnosis.

My uncle died with alzheimers.  We noticed his personality was changing but it went ignored for years.   As Pammy said he got more secretative and for a guy who was always so happy and outgoing he became quick tempered.  His wife and kids brushed it aside.  After he retired he got a part time job with the police department as a crossing guard and loved that job.  One Sunday evening we were eating dinner and he got up from the table, a few minutes later we heard the front door closse and looking out the window we saw him in his uniform driving away.  We followed him and it was a pitiful sight to see him standing on his corner with his sign up waiting for kids.  It was at that point his wife finally admitted there was a problem.  When the diagnosis was made they said he’d most likely had alzheimers for 7 years.  He went into his own world very fast after that.

longevity and healthier people because of preventive steps for other health care also impact the increase in diagnosis of adt.

someone mentioned him:  Does anyone know how Bo will go out?  I can’t think of any reason for him to leave Salem, and I sure hope they don’t write him as dying!
