but I think it’s sort of fun to see him as a priest again in something so totally different from MASH.  If they want more drama for the character then they need to bring back Ralph Waite.  He’s a very good dramatic actor.

but then, he was an excellent actor.  Do I remember correctly that he died?

Why bother doing another half-a$& attempt at PTSD. Every single story is just wear, wash, repeat…

have in real life!  In fact, most of our priests are pastors to multiple parishes these days.

between a preist and pastor.  In my church (Lutheran) they are all called pastors and I’ve always wondered what the difference is between the two in The Catholic church.  Is it because a pastor ministers to more than one parish?  If so, how do they handle masses on Sunday?

a pastor if he’s been assigned to a parish.  Some priests just teach and some take on administrative duties in the diocese working with the bishop of that area.   At one time, our priest/pastor had three parishes to minister to and each one had a school with grades K-8.  That lasted for several years until the one parish was closed due to families moving out of the area.  Believe me, that man really earned his place in heaven with all the responsibilities he had.  Now we’re down to two parishes and all the Catholic schools on our side of town have all migrated to one campus where we have Pre-school through 12th grade.  It’s working very well.  The mass schedules are set up so that there is one Mass in the evening on Saturday which each parish rotates every four months…and then one mass every Sunday at 9:00 AM at one parish and 11:00 AM at the other…those two schedules are fixed and don’t rotate.

Now a days, a parish is lucky to have one priest assigned to them. If there are more than one priests, the pastor is the priest in charge. The other priests are called assistants. Most parishes that have 2 chuches set up a mass scedule for the 2 churches. if a church doesn’t have an assistant, visiting priests can be used to say mass. A priest is allowed to say one mass daily and two on Sunday and holidays.

Although I thought it was funny that Eric said he was saying an afternoon mass because  there are no afternoon masses except for Sundays/ holidays .

When I was a teen my friends mother used to go to mass every day.  Is that just a thing of the past?

she did go in the morning.  In fact, I can recall hearing that Caroline was sometimes at mass.  Probably just the larger churches to that.

Is their a shortage of priests or is the church trying to save money (I thought the Catholic church was extremely wealthy)?  I don’t understand why they are combining parishes.

There is an extreme shortage of priests as many do not want to spend their lives celibate. Also the church has had a lot of negative press with the sex abuse scandals. Also buildings are expensive to maintain with a dwindling population. There are not enough priest to staff each church.

Also some areas have many churches in close proximity and attendance and membership has been declining. In the smmall town I live in (NE Pennsylvania),population 5000, there are 3 catholic churches, the first was the Irish church, the second was originally established for polish people who didn’t speak English.  The third was the Italian church, who brought their priests over from Italy and of course spoke Italian. At one time each group went to their own church.

As time has gone by, the population has changed and different churches weren’t needed.  Now only one parish remains open, sharing the priests. One church closed completely and the other has Sunday mass, does funerals and weddings.

I’m glad somebody mentioned that.  I thought I was the only one crazy enough to notice it!
