I have watched Days for over 30 years and I love seeing the veterans and flashbacks, but they illustrate how sad the show is now. Aside from the funeral, Days is in a real funk. I do not feel invested in any other story line. Maggie and Victor have the only interesting relationship, otherwise the women are all behave as if they can only survive with a man, Hope has even had a mental breakdown without Bo, and the men are either clueless wimps ( Daniel, Bo, Nathan etc) or bullies (EJ). Days used to be about real peope and stories (but soap-operay people and storylines) and there is no consistency in either plot or character. And there is no joy, or humor anywhere in the show, we don’t have characters like Howie and Calliope as well as stories that were just fun like Norman the Poet. And lately the writer seem to have just stopped writing and are just recycling scenes (OK how many times are Daniel and Chloe ALMOST going to get married). And the inconsistanies have become the rule, not the exception, inconsistencies of character, plot history and all sorts details medical, religious, legal etc. With the funeral I am sure ratings are up as longtime viewers who left are drawn back. You would think that the show would rev up the other stories to entice those viewers to stay on after the funeral. But I for one am ready to call the show quits unless they give me a reason to stay

I couldn’t stand it when Marlena was possessed or Stefano would kidnap her every other day, or with Kristen/Susan trying to fool John and keep Marlena/John apart. Seems like they drug storylines out a lot more back then, maybe just because I was younger and time went slower, but I remember thinking I could miss a whole week and not be confused. I don’t like this drama between Daniel and Chloe, I think it has been terribly written and not entertaining at all, but I’m liking the build up between Sami/EJ/Rafe and I’m really interested to see how the storyline between Night Hope, Dr Baker, Bo, Carly, Brady, Arianna, Nicole & EJ goes!

In the flashbacks, even those who weren’t related to Alice, interacted with her, i.e. Sami and Alice. Today they box the actors in and all of there scenes are just with a small circle of other actors. Rarely are there scenes with younger actors and older actors unless there is going to be some scolding done. Everyone has their own little circle of "friends" and enemies and that’s where it ends. I sometimes wonder how it is that these people are all connected but barely know each other.
June 23, 2010 at 2:55 pm #13867PattiParticipantto be invested in the stories as much as I miss being invested in my favorite couple(s). The present writers don’t seem to be invested in the characters, just how much turmoil and uproar they can turn out, and that is definitely not what this 40+ year fan of DOOL wants to see. I remember years ago rushing home from work on my lunch hour to catch up on what was happening with my favorites (yes, it was John and Marlena), because watching their love story brought so much happiness not only to the characters themselves, but to practically everyone they were involved with, and the fans just ate them up back in the day. Bring back the love, the decency of the characters, the deliciousness of simply seeing your favorite couple(s) happy with each other. Keep the villains and their drama – every show needs them (most times they never win in the end, anyway), but give us back a reason to become invested once again in what I have always considered to be the best soap opera ever. All I see now is a bunch of nymphos, male and female alike, who can’t be faithful if their lives depend on it. It is demoralizing and I’m just not interested in watching it. It kills what might otherwise be a good story because I’m so disgusted with the character(s) that the story becomes nothing more than a reason to use my fast-forward button, and I’m not just talking about Chloe and Daniel here. Take a really good look at the direction every couple on the show is going right now, and you should see what I mean when I say give us back a reason to be invested once again, end the demoralization of women (as well as men); lighten up on the bedhoppers, get back to writing the villains the way they should be, in stories we can love to hate because these classic characters deserve it (my God I’ve been waiting for a good knock down-drag out story between Kate and Vivian with Stefano and Victor as their shields ever since they brought Louise Sorrell back – but no such luck). Sorry for the rant, but if the writers can’t see that what they’re putting out there just ain’t cuttin’ it, and they’re unwilling to give in to what the fans really want to see, then I’m afraid nothing will save DOOL, because people will simply stop caring rather than keep complaining.
June 23, 2010 at 3:46 pm #13871BonoSugaRayParticipantwell, i’ve already stated that ONCE the writers decided to "break-up" sami and ej, I’M GHOST! And I, for one, would like it if the show KEPT at least HALF the past characters (that they’re returning for the funeral), to rejoin the show full-time! am i alone here?! i’d love to see more of this characters of yesteryear return and take on serious SLs. that would be awesome!
June 23, 2010 at 3:48 pm #13873BonbonParticipantI’d say the show isn’t very much different than has been for the past 40+ years. I think we tend to forget the horrible stories that dragged on forever. I know, since the internet, where I’ve been active regarding the show since 1994, there have been the same complaints over and over and over. Why we forget about this, I can’t imagine. At least we no longer have to suffer through people talking to themselves ad infinitum, or some of the other horrible things James Reilly consistently threw at us.
So, I just tell myself, this will eventually go away to be replaced with something else we can gripe about and I’ll just enjoy the good stuff when it’s on. Totalling it all up, I think we get more good than bad. In fact, a lot of the good stuff turns bad only because it’s repeated so often. So, hang in there, ladies, this too shall pass.
June 23, 2010 at 3:58 pm #1387453tdogsParticipantYou said what I’ve been thinking – I won’t give up the show (been addicted toooooooo long now to give it up) but there are days now where I don’t watch it – it just sits there on my DVR and blinks at me and sometimes I have to physically and mentally gear myself up to sit down and watch it because of the stupid story lines now.
I miss the days of Days that drea4713 was speaking of – those story lines were interesting…Stefano trying to get Marlena – John riding in to save her. Bad guys were bad guys back then. Not like EJ now one day he’s a sleeze bucket, the next day a kind, sweet person, next day he’s somewhere in between. Nicole is on a one track get Brady train, (now that she’s jumped off the EJ track) so that is boring. Sami is the same as she was when she was 15 years old…so I know what she’s going to say, how she is going to react to a given situation, rinse, wash and repeat (someone once said)…
Now the Hope/Bo split that was a bit interesting but the writer’s are just letting it dangle in the wind…there’s no ooooommph to that story line.
And we’ve all talked about Chloe/Carly/Daniel till we’re all blue in the face! They might as well put two cats in the scene with a mouse playing Daniel and let them go at it! Hiss/Spit/Hiss! I like Maggie, Victor, and Caroline interaction, and Stefano can zing some good ones too with Kate…Vivian coming back I had high hopes for – she was insane and funny before but now she’s just a shell of her former self.
I don’t think I will ever be truly happy with the show again unless they bring back John and Marlena – do you hear me Corday??? Bring back J&M!!!! (Rant)
Bonbon – you are right, so glad the JER days are gone – I have faith that the show will get better and you’ve been watching 20 years more than I have so I bow to your wisdom in your knowledge that it will get better…hopefully sooner than later.
Well this was going to be a one line comment and look, it’s become…my usual ‘gritch’ session about the show.
June 23, 2010 at 7:10 pm #13880Ms. JakeParticipantI’m just thrilled that they brought back these fine actors from the past! My hope is that they will continue with this trend and bring back these past characters with a new story every once in a while. And getting back to the post,I think the audience has changed over the years along with technology…..we were suprised years ago with the plot twists and turns, also….a mere shoplifting story would keep us interested in what would become of the character’s reputation! NOW…we see people kill & be killed just to come back a few months later, or be exorcised to overcome their demons! I’m sure it’s hard to top some of these stories…but, maybe if the writters just get back to realistic storytelling with characters that we have an invested interest in, they can turn it around.
June 23, 2010 at 9:09 pm #13889caseyParticipantNo special love story. Where’s any romance? Days just interchanges its couples.
June 23, 2010 at 9:36 pm #13891DeeLanParticipantI just caught up on the last 6 episodes (in 3 hours) and I can say I’m enjoying the show and it’s not just for seeing the veterans but also for seeing some family interaction. Do you think TPTB will realize people are tuning in to see that and continue with it after Alice’s funeral? Probably not, they’ll just go back to the same ol’ stuff that kept me from watchint except in bits and pieces for the last few years. I’d forgotten how many that weren’t Horton’s were still affected by Alice. I knew there was a family that lived next door at one point but forgot it was Roman & Marlena. Seeing Jennifer and Melissa looking through the photos and commenting on Jennifer and Glenn and having them get Allie involved in making the donuts and finishing the scrapbook/photo album. They forget that not every scene has to be trials and tribulations with secrets and scheming going on.
A lot of people don’t like spoilers but I for one enjoy them as it lets me know if an episode might be interesting to watch. I read this board to find out what others have to say about an episode before I decide to watch. How many others are there are doing the same. The problem with that is it’s still viewers, they don’t care if we watch and FF through our least favorite storyline or characters, the fact that we tune in at all is all they care about. Some like EJ and will watch every scene with him, others can’t stand the guy and FF every time he’s on screen but the end result is, we’re still tuning in.
