Don was gone with the car yesterday morning getting a tire fixed and I was home with the dogs. Rascal, the 7 month old Chiweenie was outside but when I let him in he started acting strange. He was banging into the bedroom door which we leave closed. At first I thought he was looking for Don so I got him in the kitchen with me while I was fixing a salad we were taking to a friend’s. He was very fidgety under my feet and whining. When I looked at him his face, especially his mouth area was swollen. He looked so pitiful but I got panicky knowing it was an allergic reaction and thinking his airway was going to close. I was shaking as I shoved a Benadryl down his throat and called Don who was helpless as the car was on the hoist with the tire gone. I remembered the vet has an emergency number and called her. She was very calm and said to give 25mg of Benadryl every 3-4 hours and not to worry about overdosing as it’s safe for him. By the time Don got home, about 30 minutes later, Rascal was running with the other dogs and eating treats but still swollen. He had a total of 4 Benadryl yesterday and this morning the swelling’s almost gone and I can’t believe how skinny his face is now. We’re thinking he might have gotten stung by a bee or wasp.
