I have to say, it was sad to see John and Marlena go, especially after he was acting so ‘evil’ and then got paralyzed! I hoope they can return in 2010, but I don’t think they will.

If I can recall, John, Marlena, Chelsea, Max, Steve, Kayla left this year, I may have forgotten someone, but this is what I remember.

I am not sure exactly when he left, but I really hated the way the writers decided to take Nick down the path of destruction.  Nick Fallon started out as such a great guy!

Nick! Oh yeah! He left in January. I miss him too.

The way Days exited him – in a paralyzed state – was bush league.

I just hated to see John and Marlena leave.  They WERE Days for me.  John has been my favorite character since the day he first appeared.  Lawrence, grown-up Nicolas, and EJ gave him a little competition but he never fell from first place in my book.

Without a doubt John and Marlena – Icons of the show – Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm – it’s still dark outside!

No contest as far as I am concerned, John and Marlena!

I do miss Chelsea too!  I really disliked her and then she really became a favorite.

although John and Marlena would always be No. 1.  Also, I very much miss Tony DiMera.  The two I couldn’t care less if I ever saw again would be Max and Chelsea Brady.

It’s a crime that they let John and Marlena go and we never got the payoff of having the old John back.  I loved the new relationship he was forging with Sami.

John and Marlena- it made no sense and their absence left a great void. Also Kayla and Steve- though they needed a decent story line- terrible missed potential.

I reread the question and gave it some additional thought and the very saddest departure was the story of little Grace dying.  I boo-hooed for a couple of days – she was precious – The very saddest scene was of Sami and Rafe in the hospital room.  How heartbreaking.

John & Marlena were at the core of DOOL.  Between the two of them, they connected to everyone and anyone who’s walked or is currently walking the streets of Salem.

And Steve and Kayla, as you said, so were misused by the writing staff that they didn’t stand a chance.  Those of us who knew them from the get-go (Oh, how I love the Oh Look A Bird site — to watch those old clips of their back story) kept watching for references, expressions, etc to warm our hearts but, alas… we were disappointed.  Those two actors delivered their best, but the stories written for them were lousy, to say the least.

Chelsea was just becoming a very likable character with a great background story.  Same with Max and the two of them together was great.  I think I miss them the most and they had the most Storyline potential moving forward.

From the dramatic results of the departure: It would have to be Grace’s death.

Saddest from the departure of characters that have been part of the show for years and seemingly based on money issues: John and Marlena.
